"I've worked for IBM for the past 14 years. In that time I did advance from Technical Sales Support, to systems architect. I spent two years in Chicago working the financial industries and nine years working retail, manufacturing, financial, governmental, etc accounts. I was highly successful my final manager lived in New Hampshire and never saw me in action."

"The company I work for has no idea what I do. They basically move the paper around. My IBM Manager is great, and know what I do on a daily bases. I have worked on these same computers for about 25 years. At first in house, with Ameritech and SBC communications. Then outsource to IBM, then subcontracted to Apex (they were pretty good) then to ArTech (very poor to work for)."

"If you're looking to rise through the ranks, this is a company with a lot of opportunity. If what you want to do is write great software, think about looking elsewhere."

"For being such a large and profitable software company, IBM isn't very good at building successful software teams. The company is not great at creating the most productive environment in which to write software."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The focus seems to always be upward at IBM rather than downward. The company would be more productive if there was more focus on the value at the bottom of the reporting chain."
