"Though the defense industry has a reputation for being an easy, lavish job with high security, that hasn't been true for most engineers for several years."

What don't you like about working at Lockheed Martin?

"Rotating shifts are not great and turnover is very high."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would ensure that programs were not reducing benefits and salary bands when the company is experiencing record profits."

"Pay and benefits are great, and I enjoy being among my coworkers."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If they got the position, I'd recommend they do the best job they can. One thing about this place that I definitely do like is that after working a while here to gain experience, a lot of doors are opened for me at other places just because I can say, I worked for Lockheed Martin."

What don't you like about working at Lockheed Martin?

"Initially, it was interesting work. I was learning how to work with the new systems, and enjoying the challenge. Now that I'm pretty much familiar with everything, my days are very tedious. It's just the same thing every day. I have skills and interest that just seem wasted working in a tech support call center."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I'm not sure that I would really do anything differently. Considering the success Lockheed Martin has had in the government contracting industry, they're clearly doing things right. I'm just not incredibly interested in the current position I have with them."

"The facility in Marion is top notch, almost on the water and the people are extremely nice. The work can be challenging but interesting."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Great employer for people right out of college. I never interviewed with them though and am not familiar with the process."

What don't you like about working at Lockheed Martin?

"After Lockheed Martin took over Sippican the management style changed and the type of contracts that were bid typically involved very little development as they were essentially build to print. Thus the need for engineering support dwindled and the work that remained was mostly support to manufacturing."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Not sure I'm in a position to suggest anything but I feel that Lockheed Martin ignored the Sippican engineering staff's expertise in taking small development contracts into production, instead focusing on large production contracts that ultimately the Marion facility was not equipped to handle."

"I liked the opportunity to roll up my sleeves, go beyond theory, and put into practice and use emerging technologies that actively defend our nation."

"The only tip I can offer is to be aware that program budgets grow or shrink depending on the political mood at the time."

"The concern about yearly Congressional appropriations of money for R&D."

"Listen more to who your end user is, for they are the ones who know what they need to get their job done."

"Functional management is out of touch with contract requirements. Would work better with hands on management style."

"Focus more on customer satisfaction and realize that your people are your assets."

"I like the people. I work with a lot of good people."

"Not really. The company is average. The pay is average. There probably won't be any raises at that particular site for a while because of the lack of business coming in."

"The atmosphere. Also, there weren't' any local opportunities for growth."

"They really need to do a better job of being open with employees."

"The cutting edge software, processes and standards. The long term friendship I made with coworkers."

"Monthly meetings were often held at a bar over pool and a beer. Not drinking separated one from the environment that they were trying to create."

"The politics between the various primes on the project. I preferred to work well with everyone on the project, regardless of which company they worked for."

"When the government awards a bonus, share the bonus with the employees that were responsible for the good work."

"The way that asking questions was encouraged to aid in problem solving."

"Be honest and offer to help others without being asked."

"The loss of funding that resulted in layoffs. I wish I had more control over the length of work."

"I would recommend assigning new people to work with another Software Engineer rather than the overloaded Manager."

"I loved being able to work on (arguably) the greatest fighter jet in the world."

"Learn the chain of command, document all communications and activities, and push hard to make ideas acknowledged."

"The rigidity of government contracting and the 'this is how we've always done things' mentality made it difficult to foster new ideas using new technologies."

"I'd suggest that management become more apt to supply its workers with current computing tools and equipment on a more timely basis."

"Try to get on a program where the contract is won. They hire on IRAD and hope to get contracts. This frequently does not work out, especially in this economy."

"When Lockheed Martin loses a contract, they boot the contractors on unrelated work and fill in with permanent Lockheed Martin people."

"Hire more permanent workers as opposed to contractors with uncertain job durations."

"Be open, honest, and ensure you have done your research for the specific part of the company you are applying to."

"The speed of change was slow, but that is normal for a very large corporation."

"Allow the staff to be more entrepreneurial so that we can identify problems or opportunities and take action."
