"Be sure to understand that this is a small firm and to seriously consider the advancement options from the technology advancement as being limited."

"The options for moving up position and responsibility wise are non-existent due to the size of the firm. The benefits package for medical and dental is more like a liability as it's too expensive to purchase."

"To re-evaluate salaries as compared nationally, as they tend to fall behind national averages and do not keep up with the cost of living."

"I enjoyed the people and the culture. I did do a little coding, which I enjoyed a lot."

"Microsoft has very fast-paced work, but a laid back culture. It is a very interesting dynamic."

"A large part of my job was not coding-related. I want to get into a more programming-heavy position."

"Corporate Downszing - the way departments were cut and the number of employees that loss their jobs"

"I liked the challenge of the work I did, and I liked actually working with students when they needed help."

"Be prepared for a roller-coaster ride. There are good days, but they're outnumbered by days of frustration, bureaucracy, and random enforcement of policies which are never put on paper, for fear that the director might be held accountable for what's written."
What don't you like about working at University of Chicago?
"My manager was demoted a few weeks after he hired me. The man who replaced him was unprofessional; he played favorites, made personal remarks about employees behind ther backs; allowed bullying; was incapable of standing up to higher management on behalf of his team; held back information that could have been used to allow me to improve, then punished me for not knowing. It was a hugely dysfunctional environment, complicated by my mishandling of a medical problem I was experiencing at the time. By the end of my tenure there, I was the team scapegoat and laughing-stock, and my manager was the leader of the pack."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"For management Nothing. They're quite happy with their extensive turnover rate among employees. But to Human Resources, I would like to convey that they REALLY need to start taking seriously the horror stories, reports, and grievances coming from a certain department."

"If you get the job try to steer clear of office politics. There are folks in leadership positions that are politically toxic."

"This company is great, I would recommend bringing your A game to the interview as it's a tough one."

"Payday can be sporadic and sometimes late. This is a concern to those on a budget."

"I suggest setting up automatic payment, or an alarm to pay employees"
What do you like about working at Johns Manville?
"The salary and benefits are very good. Communication between upper management, c-level executives and employees is good. I do like my manager; she communicates well with me and our team of analysts."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"The fact that there is a Quarter Century Club says it all. And there are quite a few members. This is why it's challenging to impossible to change the way business is done and inspire innovation and the best use of technology. It feels like the company got stuck in the early '90s. In addition, it is so difficult to fire people who are simply, in some cases, just plain nasty people who know they can't lose their jobs, that JM loses good employees because they don't want to work such people who are whiners, complainers, and stop the forward progress of the company. If I were the CEO, I would be cleaning house and offering early retirement options or let some people go in order to infuse some new energy with some new blood into the company."

"Johns Manville needs to wake up to the new millennium."

"Allow people flex hours and telecommuting, move teams closer, improve office aesthetics."
