What do you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"The company does provide a lot of opportunity to develop and grow outside of your day-to-day responsibilities. Additionally, it's a large organization and there is a lot of opportunity for promotion. The culture is laid back and the casual dress code is a great perk."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"One of the biggest hurdles is adapting to the culture and the way things work here. It's a very large company, entrenched in policy and protocol. That works for some people, but for those who prefer a more nimble, quicker-paced and open/creative culture, it may not be the best fit for you."

What don't you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"The biggest issues for me are the resistance to change/old-school culture and management style, as well as some of the benefits. First, this company and the management style, while they say they want diversity and want to develop people to succeed, it still needs to fit within a very 'old mold'. So if you are the 'type' of employee whom 'they' like, you will get ahead. People with dissenting opinions are often overlooked or not given credibility or serious consideration. As for the benefits package, while robust, it is still very outdated - segmented time off versus a paid-time-off bank short changes employees. Many of us will never use 10 sick days a year. Additionally, while the pension is nice, a more aggressive 401k match would be nice."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"This company is very slow to adapt to change and embrace new ideas/technology. In order to remain competitive and attract/retain the best talent, they really need to shift the culture to one that values more diversity of thought and is more open to accepting change and different ideas."

What do you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"The opportunities for development and growth within my role, and the culture are very 'nice'. People are interested in your development."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"This company is very rooted in its culture, and is often close-minded to people outside of their traditional 'mold', However, for those who fit here, or have the right amount of X factor, there is a lot of opportunity for growth. You will need to play by their rules, and relocate in order to advance, but the potential is great for those who can do this."

What don't you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"Employees are not empowered to make any decisions for themselves. We are too rooted in process, protocol and history, and often are fearful of making changes or trying something new. it's extremely frustrating for creative and fast-moving people."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The company needs to move faster, be more nimble, and have less hierarchy/bureaucracy. It is way too top-heavy."

What do you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"I do not work there anymore, but I think working with the other engineers was the biggest plus."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"They are highly unreasonable when it comes to holding the agents accountable for their actions. They see the agents as never wrong, regardless of any situation."

What don't you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"I thought that the culture did not promote free ideas about improvements to be made."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I felt like they did not investigate as to what some of the issues were when the process could have been improved if they would have."

What do you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"At one time, anyone who worked at State Farm was family. It was a big company with a small company feel - there was a lot of pride associated with being an employee. Opportunities were plentiful, both up the ladder and laterally. Flexibility was available, both in when and how you did your work. Execs and senior managers were held in high regard because they were knowledgeable and supportive."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you are a baby boomer or a Gen X, look elsewhere because you won't be hired. What little hiring the company is doing is focused on millennials (cheap) who can speak another language. Also, don't take a position in any call center like ACC unless you enjoy being monitored, being eavesdropped, or timed on your bathroom breaks."

What don't you like about working at State Farm Insurance?

"I left mostly for two reasons. First, the company culture (after the Great Re-Org) became completely ruined. There is no leadership of any kind left. Management is very adversarial with its employees - once considered associates, now just resources. It's very rigid and your compliance is expected at all times. Do not think outside the box and do not question. Imagine the Soviet Union during the Cold War. Second, moving up the ladder requires you to be unconditionally mobile. (The company will deny this, but it's completely true. You might get an interview, but you won't under any circumstances get the position.) Mobility is just another form of company control."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Loosen up. You're killing morale. Expect a sharp increase in attrition over the next five years. (One in four was actively seeking a new job when I left.) Unless you drastically change your approach, your position as insurance leader will fall to someone else."
