"Silo structure (functional area) of organization. Company is not project oriented. Vacation / sick time / personal time off policy is not very good, and seems to get worse until one hits 15 years of service. Management is too willing to give the customer an unrealistically optimistic construction schedule."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Be tougher in negotiations with the customer, be more generous with personal time off for employees (even if wages go a little lower)."

"The political environment of the defense industry. It is very difficult to think outside the box and often innovation is looked down upon because of the mind set that technology must remain static over time in order for it to work properly. I think this comes from the aging mainframe community that existed."

"Very stable dependable employer for professionals. You could work there for your entire career, leave with an exceptional pension, never having been exceptional at anything, just so long as you don't make a very serious professional blunder."

"Little professional growth opportunity once you show you get things done. Managers blocked transfers of good performers and encouraged dead-wood to move on."

"Prevent managers/supervisors from blocking transfers. Provide performance incentives for engineers. Break the steel workers union driven just good enough is ok culture. Give TANGIBLE recognition for exceptional performance at all levels."
