"I have found United Health Group to be a great company that cares and supports its employees. The outreach the company does to our communities is very much appreciated. The company has been highly involved in helping with the current COVID crisis."

What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"Not much. We are overworked and have more to do than our staffing can handle."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Consider your position wisely, as you will be stuck there for a while, one year at a minimum (company policy)."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"There's no responsibility given to workers, and there are no chances for advancement. We are overworked on a daily basis."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"In the support center, give the employees more to do other than just take calls all day."

RN Case Manager

"RNs should look elsewhere."

What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I like that I can occasionally get to work from home (not really a positive because there are stipulations and hoops to jump through for nurses to work from home)."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The interview process is long. Nurses, please ask a lot of questions on what the position entails. If you are taking the position out of a desire to work from home, be honest and ask what the possibility for work from home would be. It's different, depending on your manager."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I dislike the poor communication to employees and the poor management. The medical benefits are horrible, considering its a health insurance company. The position feels more like sales or telemarketing than nursing. There should be more emphasis on quotas than actual health. If you want to do case management, there are better options. This company is not a place for long term growth. There are very few opportunities for advancement for nurses."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I would suggest better communication and honesty with employees, and better benefits. The medical benefits are not good. Dental and vision are average."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"My dislikes are poor vision, no advancement opportunities, and poor process management. Middle management is in constant fear for jobs."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Bring in process management experts. Management should include internal IT staff in decisions for best practices. Hire management with IT background and not just business background."

What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I like to help the members who call in everyday. I enjoy being able to solve their problems."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't come here thinking you will be in it to win it for the long haul. Just come in with the mindset of this being a stepping stone and nothing more."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"The benefits suck! I had better benefits from them when I worked for another employer. Most medications are not covered and the out of pocket expenses are astronomical. The upper management is so out of touch with what is really going on, it is unreal. Each day, it seems more demands are heaped upon us with less guidance and time to do them. The bottom line at this company is how to increase profits for the top management to split and enjoy. I have received excellent annual reviews and received less than fifty cents in my raise. I only stay because it is a joy to be able to telecommute, although that needs work as well. We have no manager overnight, and there are no special directions or protocol for potential life threatening situations."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Require the supervisors to spend at least 1-2 hours per week on the phones, servicing members and providers so they can see how unrealistic the goals we are presented are. Focus more on customer service and less on numbers. Make sure the sources of information stay as current and up-to-date as possible to avoid wrong information being divulged. Reward CSRs on an individual basis if they are stuck on a poorly performing team or work overnight and are unable to qualify for QVC bonus otherwise. Make sure to fight for fair and just raises to keep around the top performers and decrease the turnover rate."

Manager

"This is not a Pro Employee company. They only care about profits."

What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I like the appearance of relocation opportunities, and the opportunity to learn a great deal about managed health care."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Try and get the highest salary available. Once you are employed there, the raises are very small and sometimes put on hold. Don't believe in future incentives, as they often never materialize."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I dislike the cliquish environment, lack of management accountability, poor benefits, and inconsistent policies. The policies should be the same for all, and there should be criteria developed for employees to attain privileges that are available to some and not all. UHG needs a real HR department that can affect change and hold managers responsible for their poor treatment of employees. Upper management is shielded from any real disciplinary action, and they behave accordingly. There isn't anyone that can be trusted to assist in resolving real issues. You will get plenty of lip service, and all complaints are saved and tracked, but that is about it."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Executive management needs to spend time in the trenches. Webcasts and conference calls from up on high do very little to affect any real change. They need to pay attention to the (currently meaningless) yearly evaluations, and act on them. Currently, the interest is getting the bad scores to go up the following year but no meaningful follow-up to change. Managers can make a bogus promise to their staff and tell them that their department score is dependent on this to happen. I have seen it happen. Lies to get the score up, and then the manager moves on. It is currently a waste of time. Executive management should also review the mid-upper level managers. Are they good workers but poor leaders Place good workers in positions to do that work - not lead. Not all managers that can complete tasks on a spreadsheet are fit to lead. Cross-departmental career paths should be developed for all employees, so that other opportunities exist even if their current department is being downsized. Executive management should invest more in the training of its people, and realize that there is NO FORMAL TRAINING PROGRAM outside of customer service. Web-based classes do not help adults learn. You want better/loyal employees - invest in them and get rid of poor managers. If not, do not be surprised at the wealth of knowledge that walks out the door as the market improves."

What do you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"I like the great data sets to explore. The department was large enough to provide a variety of experiences and the possibility of sharing programming and best practices. Problem was, there was never enough time to do it."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Make sure that you get in at the highest possible salary, because you may not get another raise for many years. Be prepared to get bounced around depending on the department. Most people I knew did not stay more than three years."

What don't you like about working at UnitedHealth Group?

"Too BIG! It's HORRIBLE dealing with benefits or HR, or getting to the right department for ANY troubleshooting. Most of the company has no idea what other areas do or don't do. There are a lack of communication, duplication of effort, and political issues with upper management. It is tough to get a straight answer about anything. Don't EVER go out on a medical leave."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Remove layers of management. If someone is at their Peter Principle position , knock them back down to doing the work that they are good at. I would strongly recommend that the annual employee feedback survey either be completely revamped to include actual changes that are then implemented and fully accountable, or eliminated entirely. There's a lot of talk of change and growth and improving morale, but nothing lasts. Most of the people I worked with did not believe that anything that came down from upper management would ever stick long enough to really improve the work environment. It was especially disheartening to hear that upper level management was getting huge pay raises, while those of us in the middle of the trenches, would have to do more, with no new employees (frozen for three years), no raises, and little or no advancement opportunity. If I could run things, I'd allow every exempt employee to work from home, since all meetings are held online anyway. I'd insist that low level managers be trained on true development of their staff, and include a real evaluation of managers by their peers and by their staff. Fire the ones who are abusive to staff, and reassign the workload between groups to level the amount of work."
