"Staples provided a good environment to grow as a young professional, and gave me the tools needed to really develop my current skillset and grow new talents. Management had a strong focus on their current employees, but would often times favor other employees based on geographical location. Overall, a good workplace, great co-workers, and good compensation. Major con would be one of my direct supervisors being a bit more of a party goer than I was, which would cause issues when I didn't want to go out to bars after a long work-day (this was frowned upon in the high-pressure sales environment)."

"Retail is good if you have no where else to go. It usually works if you need a flexible schedule. But it doesn't pay very well unless you know someone in the company or if you've been there a while (and even still it's not that great). It is at most times fast paced and like I said before it keeps you on your toes."

What don't you like about working at Staples?

"The retail environment can be tough. Customers can be very demanding and at times irrational. It was not for me, but I did it because it worked for my schedule. On another note, the management doesn't really go out of their way for their employees and the upper management (district) have absolutely no clue what they are talking about when it comes to being on the sales floor on a daily basis. They have unrealistic expectations. It's all about making them money! Oh and being lied to my face by the store manager...that's another good reason why I didn't like working there. That's OK though, I tripled my salary once I left that place."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The management of staples needs to focus more on the employees well beings. If they took the time and energy, Staples wouldn't spend so much time and money in training a new employee every six months for the same job."

What don't you like about working at Staples?

"I had problems with the District Manager. He started coming into the store, writing me up, and I refused to sign them for what he said were lies. He tried everything he could to get me to quit....he took me into the office, told me that I had lost my humanity, that no one liked me, that he could fire me on the spot and contest the unemployment, etc. He used the same write ups all 3 times using the same incorrect spelling. He even hired my replacement while I was working there to try to demoralize me. What a jerk!! It didn't work. A few weeks after I had surgery, HR walked in and fired me. This armchair district manager didn't even have the guts to do it himself. The GM was so upset over this, that she walked out for good that same day! The day I was fired was the same day that the results of the class action lawsuit were made public. Since I was the highest paid employee of my position in the district, this Monday Morning Quarterback District Manager did not want to pay be the additional money that the courts determined necessary based upon my hours. Since my firing, sales in this store have dropped by over 50%, they have lost many customers due to my firing, and my replacement was fired! This is a true classic example of biting off one's nose to spite their face. As far as the district manager goes, he truly has risen to the level of his incompentency."

Sales Technician

"When you're young you work retail"

What do you like about working at Staples?

"Really nothing. Retail is an unpleasant repetitive unrewarding environment."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you're desperate, why not."

What don't you like about working at Staples?

"At first in retail, you ethically sell products, but then you start getting really good at manipulating people to buy in order to put yourself high on the charts, and then customers complain rightfully so. Without even knowing it, you turn into a sales hungry machine. Not pleasant."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Perhaps not to post charts or train people. Actually, teach them to not sell, and instead teach them to assist people. Not that Staples taught people only to sell, but the ideology should be about assisting people and it was too easy to confuse the environment with a sales situation."
