"Staples provided a good environment to grow as a young professional, and gave me the tools needed to really develop my current skillset and grow new talents. Management had a strong focus on their current employees, but would often times favor other employees based on geographical location. Overall, a good workplace, great co-workers, and good compensation. Major con would be one of my direct supervisors being a bit more of a party goer than I was, which would cause issues when I didn't want to go out to bars after a long work-day (this was frowned upon in the high-pressure sales environment)."

Staples Employee

What do you like about working at Staples?

"Nothing."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Only work for Staples if you're really hungry---there are MUCH better retailers out there to work for that will value you."

What don't you like about working at Staples?

"New store opened, budget was over forecasted so we constantly failed to meet goals. Payroll cut dramatically---only the store manager and ops manager (no othr employees) working from 12 Noon to 5pm near every date to run the entire store which included checking out customers, running the copy center, assisting customers in furniture dept, in business machines, helping customers to the parking lot when needed, receiving delivery trucks (3x per week), trying to stock shelves, do administrative/management paperwork/duties, and continue meeting unrealistic expectations of a very unsympathetic District Manager. Needless to say, the store manager and ops manager did not take needed meal and rest breaks 50% or more of the time. Staples actually lost a class action lawsuit two years ago when former management personnel sued the Company for FLSA violations (and what I would call just basic human mistreatment). Just because someone is in retail management doesn't mean they should be treated inhumanly, like an animal, expendable commodity, without basic human rights."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"For Senior Management (VP's, District/Corp Human Resources Personnel), review the turnover statistics and worker's compensation claims for stores/districts, and when there is a rise or something looks odd, get involved, visit the stores, talk to the employees, conduct a climate survey, encourage everyone to be able to come forward and reveal what is going on and above all, don't assume nor rely that the District Manager is actually researching/caring to resolve the matter---or even that they are competent to do so."
