"As a Program Manager (PgM) you're always learning. No two programs are the same because technology is constantly changing. Therefore, you are constantly in a learning mode. As the PgM, you have to learn new structure and processes. Thus, a Program Manager’s world is ever changing, growing and evolving – it’s a great ride! One more thing that I love about being a Program Manager is that you work with all sorts of interesting people. Program Management is a great training ground for future CEOs. Ability to manage things, risks, tasks, processes and at the same time lead people is for the few, the proud and the good PgMs. What do I hate about being a Program Manager, your success depends on the success of the team. You're now the head coach of Washington Redskins. If the team wins you take the glory, if the team does not win, you're toasted regardless of your previous accolades as a championship winning coach. Analogously, as a Program Manager you must rise above details mentality and become more of delegator and coordinator. Else I forget, to succeed as a PgM, you must maintain an open communication channel 24x7 and you must be a good and effective communicator; otherwise, don’t go down this path."

Program Manager at Cisco Systems
in San Jose, CA

What do you like about working at Cisco Systems?

"In Cisco you work with the cutting edge technologies - always up to date. Working remotely - almost every day is a great perk too (Cisco IT only)."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Personally, I had terrible experiences with both the recruiters and the hiring managers - although I was a pretty higher-grade employee (higher than hiring managers!) at Cisco and recently got laid-off. They never contact you after the interviews unless they hire somebody, I suppose. They simply treat you like trash - although you were a Cisco employee recently. I remember, before I got the job at Cisco, I had a file written to complain (email) against the recruiter/s and hiring manager/s. But it was way back when, when the economy was NOT as it is today!"

What don't you like about working at Cisco Systems?

"Managers - unfortunately I have rarely seen a company where the managers are so worthless! You always have to say yes sir, yes sir, to get the bonus but learn nothing from them, but get orders only. I have worked for half a dozen companies globally and I know what I am talking about!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Weed out worthless managers with qualified ones. In Cisco, there are managers without any portfolio - nobody reports to them, and directors who do not have even any team to direct. Seriously!"

Program Manager at United States Air Force
in Layton, UT

What do you like about working at United States Air Force?

"Benefits (time off, good health care plan, retirement plan). Job security."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The hiring process is so automated that you likely will never get interviewed even if you get the job. Find someone who is already working in the job you want and have them help you tailor your resume to include the buzzwords that the HR robots are looking for."

What don't you like about working at United States Air Force?

"Dreary work facilities and a lack of career growth opportunities."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I'd ask VP Biden to pick up some of the slack. Being Prez is hard work. But seriously, I'd try to find some way to retain and reward my most skilled and motivated employees. Young managers should be given the opportunity to change jobs every 2 or 3 years to build their skill set and keep things interesting. There should be more internal movement within the government. Pigeon holing individuals into the same mundane tasks for a 30 year career make for a stagnant and dull work place."
