Working at Macy's in Chicago, IL: 5 Employee Reviews

Macy's Employee

"Company is extremely political. I worked there for five years and they never appreciated it. I got let go after I improved my area and poor performance was blamed even though the numbers were up. Upper management never let on that I was to be let go until the end. I was in the shoe department and the numbers were improving greatly like they asked for them to. One day, I was told I was being separated from a company I truly loved."

"This is the most racist company I ever worked for, very biased when it comes to the customers and employees. I worked for Macy's at 2 locations in Chicago on State street and the Water Tower. They treat their employees like slaves and the hard work we do is not acknowledged. I saw some things that were unethical and weird for a company to be doing, and I saw racist white co-workers of mine mistreat black customers. This company is bizarre. It needs to be slapped with lawsuits."

What do you like about working at Macy's?

"Working with the public. Making a connection with everyday individuals, the team that I work with, peer support, and the desire to determine my own paycheck."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Run away as far as you possibly can. If you do decide to stay for the interview, just nod your head and agree with everything they say. My interview wasn't nearly an interview as it was them trying to make me take the job with trying to win me over with the perks of being a Macy's employee (although, you find when you're with the company that the perks that won you over to the company are non-existent). If you're an upbeat and positive person that wish to stay upbeat and positive, do not apply for this company. They do not treat employees fairly or compensate them accordingly. When a company is trying to make work for them on the first interview, it's not a good idea to commit. I found that out the hard way."

What don't you like about working at Macy's?

"The micromanagement, constantly being under the scope for things that you do, and if you do something great, management want to know if you can make it 'better'. Cutting our commission for being the highest grossing store because we made 'too much money'. Not being rewarded for breaking previous records or given employee appreciation at no level. The benefits packages. Management constant dotting and belittlement of any and every issue because they don't want to be bothered. Working in an windowless environment and not having good infrastructure in our stockrooms. The ability not to move up within the company."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I'd bring back the old commission scales that made the employees strive to be better, bring back the rewards programs that recognized the people who go above and beyond, not dot or harass employees or pick away at certain employees that voice their opinions about certain practices they deem as unfair or unethical, hold company appreciation days where we'd give employees a nice get together setting, increase the benefits, try to build company morale again and invite friendly competition among it's workers."
