"Assistant managers are the lifeblood of any organization. Although a fantastic general manager may be in place, he should be focused on larger issues -- such as business planning -- as opposed to daily operational matters. The best assistant managers are coaches, leaders and mentors to their subordinates. At the same time, the smart general manager uses her quality assistant for advice and support, delegating to him the latitude required to succeed with everyday business."

Assistant Manager at QuikTrip
in Phoenix, AZ

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Decent pay but not worth it overall."

What do you like about working at QuikTrip?

"The pay and the benefits were good for the type of work you do."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you get hired, prepare to work and work hard."

What don't you like about working at QuikTrip?

"I got a job at QuikTrip as an Assistant Manager after I finished graduate school. I worked there for a year and a half and got a pretty good grasp of the ins and outs. I worked incredibly hard while I was there. Yet praise was incredibly scarce and practically nonexistent. I worked nights for a year and worked at over 40+ stores as an ERP. Even when I had the store spotless, the manager the next morning would try to find something wrong. I understand having high standards, but the demand for perfection was crushing many times. The assistant manager schedules there are horrible. They range from 46-50 hours a week and there are no lunch or breaks during your shift. Each shift runs between 8-10 hours. If you have a family or outside social life, forget it. I worked every other shift other than overnightseven the holy grail of QT, the Manager's schedule (weekends off) and was still very disappointed. I felt incredibly overlooked and used while being there. I felt unappreciated no matter how hard I worked. I was simply one cog in the machine that made the store run. Other managers often put others down. I never understood why so many people claimed to have such high job satisfaction while being there. Finally I realized that the way to be easily promoted is to brown-nose. Say the right thing, sell your soul to the company, and you will be promoted quickly. Luckily I was able to get out of QT and got a job in my field and am incredibly happy. The stress and overload was not worth it."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Treat employees better. There is more to retention than pay and benefits. More opportunities for time freedom and recognition will go far."

"Interacting with customers, many of whom are regulars and stop in at least once a day."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The jobs are not difficult (physically) there is no heavy lifting or hard labor, clearly not for everyone. It takes a certain kind of individual to be constantly outgoing, cheerfully greeting and interacting with customers whose attitudes with vary wildly."

What don't you like about working at Turkey Hill?

"The execution of company standards and practices is wildly inconsistent between stores, and on different shifts. The differences in a customer's shopping experience during the day compared to the evening can be as different as, well as different as night and day."

What suggestions do you have for management?

There are too many differences between the services and items available at the larger newer stores in comparison to the smaller older stores. Assistant Manager at Domino's Pizza
in Miami, FL

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Work like a slave and get paid like one. Unfair."

What do you like about working at Domino's Pizza?

"The company has some good ideas, the problem is that it isn't implemented properly. As the assistant manager, I can say it's doing better than most pizza companies right now. It has good policies and a satisfaction guarantee that surpasses that of any restaurant I have ever managed. The training is top-notch and you will attend several training courses and pep rallies to motivate and train you in their guidelines."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Come dressed up professionally, print your resume on the thicker resume paper, and be honest. I had to fire too many people because they lied on their resume. It is never a pleasant experience."

What don't you like about working at Domino's Pizza?

"Before you become an assistant manager, you start off as a crew chief or shift leader. As a shift leader, you have to work as one for three to five months whilst having the EXACT SAME responsibilities as the assistant managers and general managers. Finally, when they go to interview you to promote you, you must have an open availability 24/7 to travel to any store. I'm sorry, but I can't run to a store at 11 at night to close. I have my own problems and responsibilities in life to be solving someone else's. They expect too much from people."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"I was management. Find something better and quit. There are better opportunities out there."
