"Mercantile Bank was a great place to work."
"It is a place for all to enjoy."
What do you like about working at PNC Financial?
"Prior to the PNC brand, we were known to the world as National City Corporation. The overall experience of working at PNC Bank was at the beginning a family outside of your own family. You spent 8 sometimes plus hours with a group of people that you could really put your faith in when you needed to. There was a sense of working together as a team with one goal in mind, and that was to make sure that our customers got the best possible care and service that they deserved."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"In most instances, it's not what you know, it's who you know."
What don't you like about working at PNC Financial?
"After the takeover by PNC, things became quite apparent with the style of management that was put in place and the actual treatment of employees. Not to put down mIcro-management, but there was a moment at National City Corporation where everyone knew what needed to be done in order to make sure that every aspect of everyday functions were followed to completion and everyone knew how their specific functions were critical to other functionalities and the overall success at the end of the day. When this management style was introduced, it created an almost hostile environment amongst the employees and turned the entire operation into a boxing ring, if you will. It pretty much became every man or woman for himself and the sense of team was pretty much dissolved. I have always believed that the letter "I" has no place in the word TEAM."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I feel that as a manager, one should have a complete understanding of people. Everyone has something that may be going on in their lives that may have an effect on their day to day living. Many managers these days do not have people skills. They have one thing in mind and that is that they are responsible for the job itself and not the employee. I feel that management does not care how an employee may be feeling that particular day and when you approach an employee, whether it be a business matter or anything for that matter. You should keep in mind that you are speaking to an employee and not your child. I have always noticed that some managers who get up on the wrong side of the bed, tend to bring that situation to work with them and carry it around all day exposing their employees to their displeasures of what has happened outside of the office. When an employee does that they are immediately told about it. I feel that this should be a two way street. If someone is going through a situation that is not pleasing for them, if at all possible, leave it outside of the office and remember that everyone that is in that office should have the goal of making sure that the clients are receiving top notch care and service."
