"I have been in management with Travelers for over 12 years. For the last 3-4 years I have felt guilty about how upper management treats our employees. There is a "yes man" culture among the management team and differing opinions seem to get individuals blacklisted. It was ok in the local office and even worse while I was on the Cat team. Some of upper management don't seem to understand the strain of trying to meet unrealistic expectations has on employees. Unrealistic productivity expectations result in low employee morale. I am almost ashamed to be associated with Travelers from a management perspective. The pay is keeping a lot of disgruntled employees around and that is never a good thing. For the record I am an above average performer but the treatment of our field property employees is horrible."

"It was a great place to get started in the IT world. I was pleased to give every ounce of my hard work to a well respected company. Everyone was helping each other to get things done in a timely manner, and the supervision answered all questions that were given to them in a timely manner."

"It became known during my tenure that there is an alternate, internal rating system of employees which is only seen by management and often, this does not reflect what is actually communicated to the employee directly regarding their performance. The only explanation that I have for this covert documentation is so management can ensure that only certain individuals progress within the corporation and others that they perceive do not fit their mold are left to stagnate and ultimately resign."

"I have been working in the Travelers Claim IT Division for about 6.5 years. It is a .NET shop that uses mainframe modules to access legacy DB2 and IMS databases both real time and in batch. However, I find that the project management processes are not fluid and change very frequently. I have been able to deal with that change. As a company, Travelers compensates its employees well. There is not a lot of upward mobility and I've observed that the potential reason for this is employee longevity."

"I found that during my six month employment with travelers that there was a lot of bureaucracy that hindered the progress of the project. While the overall work experience was positive there were a few mishaps here and there that could've and should've been avoided."

"Unfortunate and sad experience that has adversely affected my life."

What do you like about working at Travelers?

"The salary which is competitive. That would be about it"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you know how to 'play the game', then you will have an advantage even if you're a mediocre performer. If you're an honest, well-meaning, hardworking employee, then you may have a problem."

What don't you like about working at Travelers?

"Office politics and nepotism-like promoting system (friends of management are offered opportunities over other employees) / Employment reviews on paper are not necessarily what's archived internally / Horrendous training program / Little and inconsistent coaching and performance feedback / Consistently high stress and unhealthy working environment / Zero support and understanding from management / Possible labour law violations (many employees do not or are unable to take required breaks or lunches due to workload and management turns a blind eye to this).Young, college graduates are always offered opportunities for advancement and training over more seasoned employees (employees over 40) even if the young employee's performance is marginal or obviously inadequate."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Regardless of high volume periods, new hires and newer employees still need to be provided adequate training and coaching. Management has consistently failed in this area creating a much higher level of despair and stress for performance struggling employees. Employees need a detailed monthly feedback session to tackle potential issues head-on which does not occur. Communication between middle management and staff needs to improve dramatically. Too many employees are suffering unnecessarily but are afraid to address issues for fear of retaliation. The behavior of management in this operation needs to be monitored more closely by home office to address possible labour law violations and overall treatment of it's employees."
