"I am a control freak. :) And I love writing code that controls devices, actuators and other things I haven't even thought of yet with the push of a button. I love creating the choreography between sensors, algorithms, actuators and humans. I love to see people use my systems and feel the delight and satisfaction they feel when a machine does their bidding. It's cool stuff."

Systems Engineer at ProObject
in Parkville, MD

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"everyone is very friendly and close nit. unfortunately, high turn over"

What do you like about working at ProObject?

"ability to work on a wide range of tasks and learn along the way. everyone's opinion counts"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"if you are an engineer that will be contracted then wait until you have been accepted onto a contract before beginning employment at proobject; otherwise, you run the risk of being let go after a couple of months."

What don't you like about working at ProObject?

"turnover. most engineers are hired to be contracted out. however, new people in all areas (including HR, accounting, etc.) come and go. the instructions for how to get things done stopped getting updated years ago so it's a mess."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"it takes longer than it should for things to get done because the requirements from top level management never seem to stop changing. from what i've learned in systems engineering: the customer should provide the needs and the engineers should develop the requirements, verify the requirements with the customer, provide alternative solutions, and then build the best solution. also, people fear for their jobs when other people are let go without obvious reason or warning."

Systems Engineer at Volusion
in Austin, TX

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"A very negative experience. Politics, politics, politics. Goodbye personal life."

What do you like about working at Volusion?

"Very little. Volusion likes to tout it's place as best place to work in 2010, but it hasn't earned that title since, for good reason"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Run, don't walk, to the nearest exit. Be prepared for a potentially grueling multi-hour interview process if you decide to go up for a gig here."

What don't you like about working at Volusion?

"The pay for every area of the company is well below market rate. Promotions are very hard to come by, and if you manage to snag one, pay increases (even those for simply merit increase) are an insult.Management is absolutely incoherent. Decisions are made without due diligence. The development team pushes buggy code on a regular basis, IT is a wreck, customer service is a revolving door. A few departments have their act together, but overall you can expect to be thrown under the bus by whomever benefits from doing so.Work/life balance is nonexistent. Volusion expects 110% from their employees at all time, even requires non-salaried employees to be on call and respond to and address emails at all hours and on weekends.Honestly - avoid this place. You can find much, much better."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Pay your employees what they are worth, and get rid of those in management who have amassed enough power to push their views and projects that negatively affect not just the employees, but your business as a whole."

"Long career, then layed off."

What do you like about working at Bank of America?

"Felt like I was learning most of the time, which was a good thing."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Be young, don't expect a lot of money, don't expect job security. Don't question managers (senior manager), they really don't want to hear what you have to say."

What don't you like about working at Bank of America?

"Higher managers made changes but did not have to deal with the work and didn't want to hear issue with changes being made, only hear positive, so sometimes hard to speak up."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Take more time to listen to team members that have to use systems you're changing to make sure the changes are for the best and will be better than what is being replaced."

Systems Engineer at LightEdge Solutions
in Des Moines, IA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"This is a great place to cut your teeth."

What do you like about working at LightEdge Solutions?

"For people like me who do systems work, its very un-compartmentalized. There is no system I dont get my hands on or not have access too. If youre used to working for some mega-corp, it can be a bit of a shock to your system. The people here are, for the most part, great to work with too. You don't run into many of the not my job! type of people. Not many other shops in town doing what LightEdge does."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I can't agree with the other poster more, make sure you negotiate your starting slary well. You'll be making it for a long time. Just make sure you go into this job with your eyes open."

What don't you like about working at LightEdge Solutions?

"I honestly dont understand the vision of the company anymore. Its crossed the threshold from a managed service provider, so a one-off consultative VAR. Financial & professional development (IE: training) perks are non-existent. Very reactive vs. proactive view towards technology decisions. Also, as an MSP, they dont do much strategically. If a capital purchase (think for things like patching/monitoring systems) wont net immediate profit, it isnt going to happen. Work life balance here can be very demanding, expect long weeks."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"1.) Why is a company of 90-100 people (roughly) in like 3 different locations in the same city Break a lease or two and call it a day. This makes for a very adversarial and disconnected workforce.2.) Most of your technical staff are using old laptops/desktops. Further, the office furniture is terrible. I brought in my own computer, monitors and office chair to remain productive. Thats ridiculous. 3.) Stop the outsourcing of your Tier1/2 support staff to Central America immediately. You basically serve a customer base with an effective radius of 250-300 miles from Des Moines. I honestly think many of our customers stay with LE because its local. If youre going to give them RackSpace or Amazon style support, why not just go with them from the word go4.) For the love of all, invest in some automation. A lot of the problem children could be replaced with a well crafted shell script.5.) Review your compensation and benefit structures. Zero bonus, zero incentives and zero ownership (ripped that up in front of us in 2008). People tend to tend their garden much better if they feel some ownership."
