Sales Associate at CarMax
in Columbus, OH

What do you like about working at CarMax?

"The co-workers all were very good about making the best of a bad situation."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't believe half of what the interviewer tells you. IE- you won't be working 44 hours a week unless you're happy with a minimum wage income. If you intend to pay your bills, you'll be working 50+ hours a week. It's also extremely unlikley that you'll be making $50,000 per year, regardless of how many hours you work. And when you ask them what their turnover rate is, count how many times you need to ask them before you receive a specific number."

What don't you like about working at CarMax?

"Incredible level of micromanaging, endless hours spent training, which was code for doing anything remotely related to Carmax while waiting for a genuine customer to walk through the door."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The sales function aspect of the job HAS to be re-thought. If the sales force is paid on strictly a commission basis, then penalizing someone for clocking in at 9:01 rather than 9:00 makes no sense. This is especially true when the event taking place at 9:00 is an unpaid sales meeting that consists of watching a role play video of a likely sales scenario...the same video that we've watched 11 times that month. It doesn't do much good to have sales managers spend most of their time in their offices providing feedback and reviews for sales people, when the rest of the sales force is out on the floor, frequently needing a sales manager's approval to take the next step in a sales process."

Sales Associate at Coach
in Dearborn, MI

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"I can honestly say that I love my store, however, I am dissatisfied with the compensation."

What do you like about working at Coach?

"I love the 50% discount we receive on items and I love the relationship I have with each of my coworkers."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Sell yourself to the management! Come in looking very fashion forward, kempt, and energetic."

What don't you like about working at Coach?

"I hate the on-call shifts that you have to call for, despite not being paid and risk getting in trouble for not working on the clock."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The store management is great! Keep being supportive. Corporate management needs to come off their pedestal and walk in the shoes of the men and women that represent and BUY the brand."

Sales Associate at Sunglass Hut
in Danbury, CT

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"It was a pretty horrible experience which nobody should have to deal with."

What do you like about working at Sunglass Hut?

"I liked my first manager who was honest, friendly and really cared about the job."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Ask about the real hours and sales goals. Ask about how many old friends the manager has working for him or her. RUN AWAY FROM THE DOWNSTAIRS DANBURY CT STORE!!"

What don't you like about working at Sunglass Hut?

"Most of the employees were high school friends who sold for each other to make it look like they reached their goals, gave each other the best sales day hours, and basically sabotaged anyone who wasn't part of their click. The acting manager was a complete control freak, dishonest and thought her position was sooo important that it permitted her to mistreat employees. The Regional Manager was rude and thought nothing of calling out employees in a disrespectful way...even in front of customers. Again, another power hungry person who truly believed she could mistreat anyone she wanted..just because. This was a truly terrible work environment and even discriminatory with nasty comments made about customers and other employees ALL OF THE TIME."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Become human beings. You really are not all that important! Show some respect and kindness toward your employees and STOP the dishonesty and sabotage."

Sales Associate at Victoria's Secret
in Northbrook, IL

"Don't be sad about not getting promoted if you don't plan on VS being a career."

What do you like about working at Victoria's Secret?

"I have had a lot of great co-workers, and our gratis/discounts are great."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It isn't very hard to get a job at VS for a part-time position, just being honest, all you need are good references. If you want a promotion, however, you need to prove yourself and not just expect it to be given to you based on seniority. Some managers play favorites, just the way it is, and the only thing you can do is to try and out perform the other candidates and have a good attitude."

What don't you like about working at Victoria's Secret?

"I've worked at 2 different stores, and management was very different in each store. I feel like the managers at higher volume stores have an attitude and act like they are better than everyone else because they manage such a large store, and it translates into the way they treat their part time associates. Managers at lower volume stores seem to be more down-to-earth and understanding of their employees needs and promotions seem to come easier."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Managers of larger stores need to realize that they are not such hot stuff and that they should treat their employees with respect, as they are 90% of their workforce. Promotions from within should be considered before outside hiring and should be based off of merit and not personal favorites."

Sales Associate at Carolyn Pollack Jewelry
in Albuquerque, NM

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"This was the single worst retail job I've had second only to David's Bridal."

What do you like about working at Carolyn Pollack Jewelry?

"The friends that I made while experiencing this dreadful company."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Just don't accept the job, the jewelry is poor quality and over priced and the company is miserable to work for."

What don't you like about working at Carolyn Pollack Jewelry?

"Micromanagement from company owners as well as literal surveillance of employees both in person (parked in parking lot to watch) and via CCTV. Additionally, it was completely against the rules to have food a beverage in the store whatsoever because, god forbid, you spill iced tea on their $20,000 carpet designed by the same company that designs Tiffany's carpet. So, if you don't want to starve, you have to eat at McAllister's or spend your measly wages at one of the other restaurants in the areas"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Stop trying to make your employees feel so small by literally looking down your nose at them."

Sales Associate at Sleep Outfitters
in Nashville, TN

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Don't work for IMS aka Sleep Outfitters and Mattress Warehouse in TN."

What do you like about working at Sleep Outfitters?

"Nothing. It is in the end a minimum wage job unless you are lucky to be in one of 4 stores out of 12 that is profitable and those employees aren't leaving."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Warning, do not waste your time. McDonalds is a better place to work and you know what you are getting into. Before you consider walk into a store on a week day and see if they have any customers."

What don't you like about working at Sleep Outfitters?

"They make promises about a change in the pay program and they break their promise. Unobtainable goals to try to keep you enslaved. Frequent useless meeting and long distance travel with long hours and no compensation. Bonuses are anywhere from $10 to $25 on average.Minimum wage is the norm for the vast majority of employees."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Stop being so greedy and share the wealth. You don't need 3 airplanes. Tell people the truth about the pay before you hire them. Pay people fairlly. That way you can keep people."

"Repetitive manual labor"

What do you like about working at Walmart?

"I have the freedom to do my job without interference, within reason, although this seems to be exclusive to my department. I also like the bonuses!"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Not particularly. Don't be nervous. Just act naturally. Don't get caught in a lie."

What don't you like about working at Walmart?

"I hate the drama. Rumors abound at my store, there are constant squabbles between departments, etc."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Focus more on training. The better you train us, the more money walmart will make."

Sales Associate at McCaulou's
in Lafayette, CA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"This was a learning experience."

What do you like about working at McCaulou's?

"Meet new people, sales experience, nice lunch places nearby, area walkable."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"I suggest that anyone interviewing with this company know that their employment will be temporary and that they should try to get as high a wage as possible."

What don't you like about working at McCaulou's?

"Bosses unfriendly, nonconstructive criticism, treat 'floaters' as expendable labor, minimum wage, zero opportunity for promotion. Middle management clearly favors certain individuals. Upper management generates unnecessarily complex paperwork, and other bureaucratic processes. Long-term sales-floor employees treat their positions as dead-end jobs."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Middle management is clearly overworked, which is why they seem unfriendly and unapproachable at times. Certain individuals could even be considered 'mean.' I would suggest expanding middle management staff, preferably from some of the other long term employees. Also the parking situation needs to be dealt with. At least get a shuttle or organize carpools. Security needs to be employed to prevent customers from parking in employee spaces and to prevent people from parking behind other parked cars and blocking spaces."

Sales Associate at R.C. Willey
in Orem, UT

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Was a good fam oriented company. Now typical corp America. Making $ for owner."

What do you like about working at R.C. Willey?

"I like that we are closed on Sundays. That we are always paid on time. Even a day or two early, of the pay day is on a holiday or Sunday. I enjoyed working with most of the other salesmen. Paid vacation, sooner or later..Mostly takes a while to accrue. Medical insurance covers preventative care (annual physicals) 100%"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"When interviewing for this company, ask a lot of questions. Make sure that you understand how you are paid, what is REQUIRED to not feel stressed. Keep in mind, that they change rules fairly often, so, whatever you are told about commissions, bonus, spiff programs..they can change. Of course, they can become better later. Find out everything you can about how you are paid, how pay can be taken away (returned sales, charge backs)"

What don't you like about working at R.C. Willey?

"The company is less oriented for the employees than they used to be. More stress now from sales quotas and warranty sales quotas. Not fun to work here anymore. Quotas force some sales people to work more than the standard 40 hrs. this also causes contention on the sales floor because other sales people feel they are losing commission. The company lowers commissions to make more profit than they used to. Product companies were paying extra spiffs and the company told them all to stop. So, less income for us. The health insurance offered , is only High Deductible coverage. So, aside from paying the medical ins premiums, doctor visits have to be paid in full until a high deductible is met in the year. Too many meetings. There are meetings every day, for all shifts, except for the sat. afternoon shift. Many are unproductive. Most salespeople express their discontent with the company. Negative enviroment."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Hire managers that actually have had good sales experience, firstly (Not the case here). Pay them better than the salespeople so the good salespeople don't want to only sell and not progress. Try harder to help us make and close sales. Try harder to say YES more often to the customers rather that enforcing rules."

"I really enjoy my work experience. One problem we seem to have is drama."

What do you like about working at Jack's Pets?

"I like how easy they make it to move up in the company. I love our set schedule! I like that it is really easy to get more or less hours depending on what you need. I love getting Jack's bucks when we hit goal for the month!"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Just be confident. If you have had any animal at all reference that, even if it was one dog when you were three. Make sure they know that you take care of the animals that you do have."

What don't you like about working at Jack's Pets?

"I don't like how little my feedback affects anything. I don't like the lack of communication."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"COMMUNICATE! You can never communicate too much. That is the biggest issue my store has."

Sales Associate at Target
in Brunswick, GA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"Over all my experience with this company has not been very good, sub par at best"

What do you like about working at Target?

"The hours, during peak sales seasons, are great and overtime is almost a given during the holidays. If your boss likes you, then you really have no worries. All of your coworkers (aside from managers) are usually always on your side and will back up your decisions, if they make sense. When you do actually get training, it is informative and very thorough, and they tend to follow up with you to make sure you fully understand your duties. For the most part the work is pretty easy and laid back."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you really want to apply and accept a call for an interview, be prepared to answer questions pertaining to past work experiences, specifically in retail environments. Go in and speak to the store manager after applying, they like to see a sense of urgency when it comes to those seeking a position in their company. Do not wait on this company, if you do that then they will never call you in for an interview, if they don't call you in a week after speaking to the store manager, then go back in and speak to someone else and see if they can help out by pushing your application. Also expect to be there for a very long time, for orientation, if you accept a job, they give you a full tour of the store and require that you do cashier training during orientation, every employee in Target is trained on the cash registers, whether you work in the back or the sales floor."

What don't you like about working at Target?

"The management is very restrictive on many things. They like to watch your every move and comment on it in a very negative way, almost to the point of harassment, it gets to be very overbearing at times and it's very easy to reach your breaking point. They're not very keen on anyone who breaks social norms, for example: they do let you dye your hair any color you want, but if they don't like the color you choose, your hours will reflect it, also, if you wear any sort of clothing that does not match up 100% with being a masculine man or a feminine woman, your hours will reflect negatively. They're not very understanding about things like deaths in the family, they tend to see it as a chore to give you any sort of paid/unpaid leave for grieving. Over all it is not really a great company if you're seeking a well oiled, professional environment, unless you really enjoy micro-management and nepotism, which also runs rampant through the company."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Loosen up and allow your employees to work without constantly breathing down their necks. Once they're trained, and have been doing it for a while, they know what they're doing and they can do it efficiently. Embrace all aspects of society, do not be so opposed to things that break the mold, allow people to be individuals and do not punish them for it by taking away their hours."

"Great products and co-workers, management needs to not be so money hungry."

What do you like about working at Victoria's Secret?

"We get a good gratis/discount on merchandise, great co-workers, great sales when we work as a team. Receive constructive feedback and coaching from specialists and category supervisors."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It's easy to get a job with the company but every store is different, lower volume stores aren't as pushy with the sales goals or standards as higher volume stores are."

What don't you like about working at Victoria's Secret?

"Having to keep track of every single product we sell even though we don't get commission, it's pointless and tedious. Upper Management personally attacks employees and makes them feel bad when sales goals aren't being made, hard to get recognition when you know you've done a good job or are working really hard. Hard to move up in position unless you're a favorite of the managers."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Upper management shouldn't blame a slow business day solely on the sales associates, it's unfair and not always in our control. Don't force us to basically assault customers and smother them during their entire experience, this tactic DOES NOT WORK, they always leave the store cuz they feel uncomfortable, like we are stalking them. Be more constructive rather than condescending."
