"There's a high turnover rate for reps (since it's sales) so it's hard to see people leave work after building friendships with co-workers."

"Management isn't always around to help and relies too heavily on everyone taking their own initiative. Some more direction and instruction would be nice!"

"They did not keep close enough eye on us. They were focused too much on themselves."

"I would be much more involved in the interns work life and getting them to succeed. I would help them more as they started out."

"It is an unlimited fountain of resources. Being represented by a fully strong institution from both a AAA financial and client service standpoint."

"Have some kind of business ownership exposure. It is a hard transition from those who have never been a 1099 employee. Don't be naive to the point you shut others out who are trying to give you advice."

"It sometimes felt as if there was more of an emphasis on sales than guidance."

"Working in a fast paced environment is understandable, but slowing down to take the time to listen to newer employees would be beneficial to both parties."

"There were aspects that I enjoyed but aspects that I did not. I loathed the cold calling, but I loved the moving about and working with people."

"It only works for a certain type of people. This helps the company because they automatically weed out the poor workers."

"Northwestern Mutual pays their employees based on performance. I am extremely driven and motivated so getting paid based on performance was extremely satisfying."

"Give the internship 100%. It will push the boundaries of your comfort zone and give you experience unmatched by any other internship. There is a reason that Northwestern Mutual is considered a Top Ten Internship. The internship develops leaders and encourages self-motivation, determination, and entrepreneurship."

What don't you like about working at Northwestern Mutual?

"Northwestern Mutual is a great company however, my time as an intern made me realize that working in the insurance industry was not for me. Despite my lack of desire, I gave the internship 100% and at one point ranked as high as 37 out of over 3000 interns nationwide."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Create more competition within the internship. My drive came from challenging other interns to outperform me. Competition is what fueled my success and I suspect that it would do the same for other interns."

"This company is solid and has job security that is difficult to find."

"Be prepared to discuss examples of how you showed appropriate behavior in difficult situations. They focus highly on competencies."

"It is pretty conservative. It is considered the nice company and many times people do not want to rock the boat."

"NM is still very conservative in dress and behaviors.. It can be somewhat stifling."
