Walgreens Careers & Info

Current CEO: Gregory D. Wasson

Status: Active

Founded in 1901 by Charles R. Walgreen, the retail and pharmacy chain continues to provide access to a variety of consumer goods, pharmacy, health and wellness services. Most locations cater to general retail shopping and over-the-counter health goods, with a fully staffed pharmacy for prescription and behind-the-counter medicines. The company also had a hand in creating the ubiquitous milkshake during the 1920s.

The company’s headquarters is located in Deerfield, Illinois, with various satellite offices located throughout the United States. Walgreens Co. employs over 244,000 employees in 8,169 locations, including 7,733 retail store locations in 50 states and Puerto Rico. Last year, the company generated over $67.4 billion in revenue. Walgreens Co. continues to take an interest in expanding to new, untapped locations, providing those who wish to work with the retail and pharmacy chain plenty of opportunities to do so.

Most of the positions offered by the pharmacy chain are located within the company’s retail locations, with those positions requiring a heavy emphasis on providing positive interactions between staff and customers. Those with a knack for interacting with store customers while delivering excellent customer service will enjoy working at Walgreens. Those who prefer office duties may be better suited to the positions offered at Walgreens’ corporate locations. The average pace of the work environment at store locations usually depends on the amount of floor traffic present. The pace may seem hectic at times, but most employees can handle it without any problems. New hires will enjoy being a part of the courteous and professional Walgreens culture. The culture itself promotes an environment of respect and cooperation among all employees, with plenty of opportunity for the advancement of Walgreens careers in both retail and corporate environments.

Walgreens benefits differ between part-time and full-time employees. Part-time team employees and their immediate family members are eligible for a 15% discount on in-store purchases, including 20% on Walgreens-branded products. Walgreens also offers part-time employees a flexible spending account for out-of-pocket medical and dependent care expenses and a profit-sharing retirement plan, along with personal leave and vacation time. All Walgreens employees are well-compensated in pay.

Full-time employees of Walgreens receive company paid life insurance, voluntary life and accident insurance, paid disability leave, sick time, holiday pay, funeral leave, jury duty pay and medical and dental coverage. Full-time employees can also participate in a prescription coverage program with minimum co-pay.
