Working at Union Switch and Signal in Irwin, PA: 1 Employee Reviews

Senior Software Engineer

"Realistic review from one of many disgruntled employees"

What do you like about working at Union Switch and Signal?

"I used to like benefits. I had 3 weeks of paid vacation, plus a paid week off between christmas and new years and we can buy another week of vacation each year. Recently they took away the week between christmas and new year and rumor has it we won't be able to buy an extra week next year."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"It isn't hard to get a job here. If you know C++ and some unix, you won't have any problems interviewing here."

What don't you like about working at Union Switch and Signal?

"Company is always losing money. The software they make is of poor quality. No flexible work schedule. Mandatory overtime. Management does not have a clue about how to run a software division."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Fire the mid-level managers. The staff turns over constantly and upper management turns over constantly. The one thing that never changes is mid-level management and they have been making the same mistakes for eons.Get adequate hardware and software resources for the staff. Move to an agile process (the process called scrum at the switch is really just a modified waterfall). Actually move to a product centered model similar to what Digicon used to do, but with a lot more configuration options so it can still be customized for each customer. It would radically increase the quality and radically decrease the cost of producing the software for the customers which would mean more jobs and more money."
