"I've been working at Raytheon, Space and Airborne Systems for the past 15 years right out of college. The people are friendly; the management I've had were generally not overbearing; and, the work is challenging. This is a defense contractor in the aerospace industry, so the pace tends to be slower than the commercial sector. But overall, I enjoyed working for them."

What do you like about working at Raytheon?

"The upside of working at Raytheon: you get to work on challenging and important products for our nation's defense. The technical rigor you learn will be useful inside and outside the company. Raytheon's diversified portfolio means that employment security isn't overly sensitive to individual programs being canceled."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"If you're a young engineer fresh out of college it might not be bad to spend a few years working at Raytheon to get some real world experience working on sophisticated products. Just don't let yourself get trapped. Get the knowledge, build your resume, and run off to a place where you can be rewarded for your contribution."

What don't you like about working at Raytheon?

"Raytheon is incredibly, unbelievably bureaucratic, even Kafkaesque. Some of that is just the industry: government defense customers expect things to be done in a bureaucratic way, and a rigorous process is warranted given the life-or-death criticality of the systems. That said, the attitude is pervasive throughout the organization even when it's counterproductive. There is little room for creativity or defining your own role. You will be a tiny cog in a big machine."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Raytheon needs to stop just talking about valuing their employees, and actually start doing it. The company does well at providing the things that don't take effort, just a bit of money, like good benefits. However, when it comes to things like career advancement on a non-management technical track, or just being able to influence the way things are done, the individual employees are left out in the cold. The internal employee opinion survey has been echoing this sentiment for the last 5 or more years. It's time to do something about it!"
