PetSmart was founded in 1986 by Jim and Janice Dougherty. The first two stores were opened in Phoenix, Arizona, under the name PetFood Warehouse. The name and logo were later changed to PETsMART in 1989. In 2009, Robert F. Moran became the CEO of PetSmart, Inc.
In 1994, PetSmart Charities, Inc. was formed as a nonprofit organization committed to locating homes for homeless pets and to ending euthanasia. To save 4 million pets from euthanasia yearly, PetSmart Charities and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) partnered up to help pet owners find low-cost spay/neuter programs in the community.
In 2005, PETsMart changed its name to PetSmart. Currently, PetSmart has 1,190 stores in the U.S. and Canada, with annual revenue of nearly $6 billion, and employs more than 46,000 people. As the number one specialty retailer of pet supplies and pet foods, PetSmart currently carries 10,000 products. The store encourages pet owners to bring their pets and offers grooming and dog training. PetSmart also owns and operates the Doggie Day Care and the PetSmart PetsHotel that board cats and dogs. They also carry many species of fish, along with aquariums and assorted supplies. In addition, PetSmart owns nearly 20% of the shops in which veterinarian services are provided through the Banfield Pet Hospital.
PetSmart careers can be developed in a variety of positions within the organization. There are the stores and 165 locations with the PetsHotel, Doggie Day Care and a veterinarian office, all from which careers can be launched.
People who are contemplating working at PetSmart must have a love for animals, be able to care for a wide range of them and be willing to learn.
The PetSmart culture is one of hard work and long hours. The care of the pets in the stores is often demanding. But, for those who love animals, the job is fun and satisfying.
