Contractor

"Worked at Menards for 3 years. Enjoyed my time, lots of opportunity. Worked directly with vendors to supply local contractors and commercial businesses. Oversaw take off and management of accounts. Personally estimated barns and small homes. Familiar with all phases of construction except plumbing and electrical."

"Over the time I have been here, we have had at least four general managers, about a new one every two years. They offer specific education, provided that you are willing to learn off the clock as you train. I did get paid in-house manager training years ago, but they never offered opportunity to "move-on-up". I went from stocker to part-time sales to improve finances, however that led to a decrease in hours 24 down to as little as 8 hours in one week, so i returned to morning stocking. Few benefits. No paid vacation, no paid personal leave, no paid sick leave, no paid maternity leave, no health insurance (although dental insurance offered to part-time help at a cost), no matching 401K. You do get limited 10% discount, and annual bonus based on how long you have been at company from 0% to 15% of your annual income. Christmas bonus from $30 to $250, and various free gifts mailed to your house thourought the year."

"I held the intern position for over a year, and have to say that I would have loved to have been able to stay. I know that there are a lot of people spreading rumors that it is a terrible place to work, but honestly for programmers: work in the IS DC department. The team is nice, the manager is great with scheduling for interns, and the pay is nice. It is a little quiet, but you can listen to music. They are also accepting of minor use of your phone on the job. You get started on your projects within a month (depending on your hours) and actually get to put code into production."

"Of all the places I was qualified to work for when I started working, Menards had to be the best place for me to work. The salaries are above average for the experience required. The coworkers are overall helpful and want to help everyone, team members or guests."

"The standard retail job, with hours that seem so out of whack. Besides giving people full time, they give part time pay with full time hours. You can't have a set schedule if you're FT, you need to have flexible hours so you can close 5/7 days a week."

"Horrible, staff was stuck up and inconsiderate. Staff was also not very friendly, didn't feel welcomed at all."

"Menards has the potential to be a great privately owned company if they would invest back into their business. This investment I think should be through higher wages, stricter safety standards for their facilities (fixtures aren't bolted to the floor), off-site training for employees (less attitude contamination and work ethic smear). Actually following the policies and procedures they have established and hold persons accountable."

"It's a great company to work for, it employs over 190 at each store and there located in 14 states. Just under 250 stores in 14 states"

Production Team Leader

"I worked at Menards Warehouse from 2008-2011. Menards was my second job I had after high school and I can honestly say it was not that bad. I was young and I moved up in the company after a year or so when they saw my consistency at my work station, being on time, showing leadership roles and accomplishing daily goals. Loved the fast paced environment because it made the day go by pretty fast. I thank them for even giving me a chance at the age I was, but I never let them down - I did my best."

Menards Employee

"One of the quickest ways to ensure employee satisfaction is work-life balance, and Menards fails miserably in this regard. They make certain that your entire schedule revolves around them. It is never stable, and can change at a moment's notice. They can keep you until close, and bring you right back in to open the next day. This is the only place that I have worked where the time clock is not right next to the break room. I lose 6 minutes per break per day due to this."

"I've worked for Menards for 7 years. The job is great. The people are great but the expectations are hard to meet. The company asks for a lot of your time."

"The management is downhill, the turnover is bad. There is little to no recognition for the amount of work for the low pay. Equipment is junk and unsafe. They don't treat employees like they should."

"I have worked in my current position for over two years. I have a great deal of freedom with how to accomplish my daily goals. I am focused most of the time on sales and guest satisfaction. I would recommend this type of position to anyone that is guest focused and good with technical knowledge. The ability to customize explanations to the person is a plus. Knowledge of basic computer functions and shopping online are a must as the company is becoming more web focused as a way to drive sales."
