Current CEO: Jeff Jones

Status: Active

H&R Block is a tax preparation company operating in the United States and abroad. Started in 1955 by the brothers Henry and Richard Bloch, the company has expanded to more than 11,000 corporate-owned and franchise offices.

H&R Block careers include a variety of jobs both at the corporate and local level. At the corporate level, H&R Block employs candidates with backgrounds in accounting, banking, and business as well as public relations and marketing. These positions are generally considered full-time.

The most common H&R Block career involves tax preparation at local offices, working directly with the public to prepare taxes and answer financial questions. This position also requires the tax preparer to try to sell H&R Block financial products to their clients. Other opportunities for working at H&R Block at the local level include positions as office leader and client services provider, providing support for both clients and tax preparation professionals. Many positions in local offices, including most tax preparation positions, are seasonal.

Those interested in tax preparation will be required to enroll in H&R Block's tax courses. These classes generally start in August and offer a flexible schedule. They include 84 hours of training in tax preparation and customer service. Course costs vary by location. Enrollment in H&R Block courses does not guarantee employment with the company.

H&R Block benefits vary depending on the job. Full-time employees are offered medical, dental, and vision insurance as well as disability and life insurance. The company offers assistance with tuition, adoption, and retirement through stock options and a 401(k) plan.

Seasonal employees are offered partial benefits. Limited medical, dental, and vision insurance is available, as well as term life and AD&D insurance. Some benefits, such as paid time off and participation in the 401(k) program, require at least 1,000 hours of work during the year to qualify.

According to the company, H&R Block culture is centered around partnership and shared ideas, with a high value placed on diversity. Those who have worked for H&R Block as seasonal tax preparers have reported a variety of different experiences, but are generally positive about the tax education they receive and the opportunity to help the public with their taxes. Opportunities for advancement and satisfaction with the pay scale are often rated lower. Overall satisfaction with a career at H&R Block is higher than the industry average.
