Frito-Lay has a long history that began before the companies merged to become the modern snack food giant. The Frito Company was originally started by Charles Elmer Doolin in 1932. By the time Doolin died in 1959, the company had spread across the country and was grossing millions each year. H.W. Lay and Company formed by Herman Lay in 1939, after he purchased numerous manufacturing companies from Barrett’s Food Company and became established in the business. It was in 1961 that Frito-Lay merged to form one snack food company. In 1965, Frito-Lay merged with Pepsi Cola to form the large snack food and beverage company PepsiCo, Inc.
