"I like writing code, determining the best way to accomplish a series of tasks. I like the cooperation between coders who are working on different aspects of the same system. I enjoy writing specifications (don't laugh, I do!). I like the hours. I like the fact that I can do my job from any location that supports a high speed internet connection to my workplace."

Engineer at Xceed Technologies
in Chantilly, VA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"CRAP"

What do you like about working at Xceed Technologies?

"multI cultural environment, good to meet people from different backgrounds"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Ask as much questions as you can about what they expect you to work on."

What don't you like about working at Xceed Technologies?

"1. Xceed Technology management is management is Type A workaholic in nature. They own the company and have the most to benefit. They expect the same crazy working hours from all their employees, but there is not recognition or even a decent thank you for the hard work.2. Management is extremely controlling and paranoid. There is a general fear that pervades the environment. There is a strong egoistical strain in the management. Feedback is taken very negatively and personally, so forget about trying to be open with positive feedback.3. Pretty much everyone is on a H1B visa. This allows the management to control the workforce and extract a lot more out of the employees unfairly.4. There is not much new learning. You work hard, you put in extra time for all the project work. And then they still expect you to learn on your own time! There is practically no formal training provided by the company.5. There is very poor work-life balance in this 'work, work, work' type environment. Including late nights and weekends are a norm. This is the most stressful job I have had ever. With a typical poor small-company benefits and poor bonus/reward, I do not know why someone would want to work for Xceed unless you are desperate for a job or stuck with a H1B at Xceed. But for someone looking for new emplyment at Xceed, I hope this review provides some good warning signs."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Be professional in your conduct towards employees. Be fair.2. Be fair in expectations from employees, and strealmline the chain of command - different people in senior management continue to own the employees and demand multiple, different things at the same time.3. Respect Work-Life balance. Do not extract everythign out of an employee just because you can."

Engineer at Lockheed Martin
in Marietta, GA

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"A decade-plus of bureaucratic nonsense, underpayment, and HR quotas. Wasted years."

What do you like about working at Lockheed Martin?

"Thanks to the company's size and strategic hiring (i.e., former generals, admirals, colonels, etc.), they've basically captured the Pentagon, so all the really big projects have at least a touch of Lockheed."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't. You'll waste years of your life and lose years of income growth. Stay away from Lockheed!"

What don't you like about working at Lockheed Martin?

"Grossly bureaucratic, upper management is clueless at the micro level and dishonest at the macro level. Managers are held to strict performance rating quotas, basically only one person a year is allowed to have a top rating. HR forces everybody else into the piddling-raise, no-promotion range, then tells the managers to lie about what really happened (the good managers tell you anyway). It's a fundamentally broken company, with massive layers of entrenched dead wood that upper management refuses to deal with. Lies from upper management (VP and above) are standard issue, but that doesn't keep them from sanctimoniously preaching about ethics. VPs preach about cost savings, but fly first-class for grip-and-grins on a weekly basis while denying mission-critical travel to the people who do actual work. Training is strictly CYA stuff so the lawyers can say We told them so! Actual technical training is nil, and management/financial training is terrible. Management by intimidation is widely practiced. HR is terrible; recently they've started doing Mickey-Mouse stuff like requiring salaried professionals to clock in and out with their badges; this is obviously the run-up to a big layoff, and they're trying to generate easy firings to keep from paying severance (HR is staffed with idiots, and apparently they believe engineers are just as stupid as they are). Company is top-heavy with older lifers who will take whatever meager crumbs management doles out. 2% raises are the standard, but the old coots who've never worked anywhere else will just say, 'be glad you have a job!'. Management openly tells employees they should accept the lousy conditions and subpar pay because 'you can't get a job anywhere else.' They're delusional; I had a new job with a giant raise within days of starting to look around. Only regret was waiting as long as I did to jump ship. There's going to be a HUGE exodus of talent once people realize the don't have to put up with Lockheed's BS."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Fire yourselves. And short of that, stop making corrupt deals with the Obama Administration to sell out your employees."

Engineer at University Corporation for Atmospheric Research
in Boulder, CO

Please give us a one liner to describe this review.

"There are turf wars around every corner in this organization."

What do you like about working at University Corporation for Atmospheric Research?

"UCAR is at the American center of climate science. There are a lot of programs going back a long way."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Great benefits. No advancement for non-scientists. Salaries are 1/3 lower than peers for non-scientists. Mostly soft money, and increasingly so- which is the reason for the lack of advancement opportunities. This leaves only long term employees in management or senior positions fighting over a shrinking pie of dollars and resources. Qualified younger professionals (<40) will generally find work elsewhere in the same area."

What don't you like about working at University Corporation for Atmospheric Research?

"Tenure-like older employees who feel constantly threatened by younger, more productive employees. The place is filled with turf."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Other NSF organizations are rapidly using more creative approaches to erode UCAR's reputation as the place to throw money at. They have lower overhead, attract more new scientists, and are developing into more relevant institutions for American science."
