A major giant in retail, Wal-Mart is a globally-recognized discount department and warehouse store. It stands as the largest private employer ever with over 2.1 million employees. It began in in 1962 and has grown into one of the largest companies with 4 different subsidiaries under its name, including Walmex, Asda, Sam’s Club, and Seiyu Group. Among Wal-Mart’s main competitors are Target, Kmart, ShopK, and Meijer.
Wal-Mart has about 100 million customers, according to the Wall Street Journal. In order to accommodate their large consumer base, Wal-Mart offers a variety of different types of stores, including supercenters and Wal-Mart Express. The supercenters house every kind of retail product, from pharmacy care to portrait studios to gasoline.
Headquartered in Bentonville, Arkansas, it operates under 55 different names worldwide. Other names include Best Price in India and Seiyu in Japan. Recent initiatives of Wal-Mart include “Wal-Mart to Go” delivery service, and a nutritional value improvement program.
