Overview Virginia Tech is a higher learning institution located in Blacksburg, Virginia. The school is formally known as Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. It was founded in 1872 as a land grant college and was known as Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College. Virginia Tech is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and School Commission on Colleges. The school offers 65 bachelors degree programs and 150 masters and doctoral programs and has an enrollment of over 31,000 full-time students.

Virginia Tech is one of the few universities that maintain a corp of cadets, which is a military unit within the university. The corp of cadets march to duty stations in formation, wears a uniform, and receives a military and leadership educational experience.
