"Do not complain about your current position. Focus on what you do well and how you will contribute to the mission. Demonstrate how you are a team player and that you believe that a rising tide lifts all boats. Show how you go above and beyond to do more than just check the box in your jobs. Show a positive attitude and a calm, clear demeanor."
What don't you like about working at U.S. Department of Defense?
"It's boring. The performance is very low. Management is resistant to change. People who try to do things differently are punished by resistance and complaining. I have no opportunity for growth in my current position but make too much money to easily transition to another career field at my salary grade."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Focus on performance and reward the top performers. Break the status quo and don't be afraid to innovate and change. Stop doing things the same way they have always been done. Be open to being uncomfortable and having some people not happy."

"Pretentious and ill informed managers make life completely miserable while working there."

"Be prepared to walk in the door with drive and anticipation and have it all sapped within the first 6 months with words like, Well that is a good idea but it won't work here."

"Pay is crap, work hours expected are unrealistic at best. Management could less care about employees, they are more worried about their next position."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Pick an actual direction that each NEC would be able to follow as opposed to dictating a solution with a shovel and you need a hose."

"Pay. Job security. And because of my rank, I am in charge of my schedule."

"It is a good job with a lot of job security. But it is also very linear with little room for thinking outside the box. And beware of the people always looking to raise a fuss if you step outside your box."

"Little or no freedom in the work schedule or the work product. Also, my work lacks meaning. It feels like I move paper as opposed to accomplishing anything real."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I would try to make the office less rigid, more employee friendly. Give the employees more free reign to take their projects and run with them. Give them a chance to succeed."

"A sense of purpose and the federal benefits, and most importantly, the job security."

"Be careful in what division of the department you choose as well as the job field you select. Some are better than others as far as moving from pay grade to pay grade."

"There are to many Indian chiefs trying to control the Indians and it appears many of the chiefs actually lack any real experience on what they oversee."

"Would be more innovative by taking on suggestions and recommendations that are sometimes outside the box and tend to gravitate towards being forward thinking."

"We all need to work with this and it is a blessing if management is open,"

"Job security and federal pension, easy access to the Pentagon, parking at the Pentagon, food choices at the Pentagon, federal transit subsidy for the Metro (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority ), and the ability to tele-work."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Upward mobility is non-existent, there will be three more years of pay freezes, you will have to pay more into your retirement -which represents a 5% pay loss, there is an entrenched bureaucracy which is stubborn, is not open to new ideas. Lastly: Good Luck!"

"Maniacal boss, little chance for promotion, pay freezes, pay reductions, little ability to expand into different arenas."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Actually talk to and engage my employees. Learn about their previous experiences and see what else they bring to the table. Offer tele-work as a daily option. Let employees ex-tern at other agencies and see if they would like to move on or bring back new ideas from other partners. Get an external look from private enterprises to see what we could do differently and more efficiently."

"The staff and the CEO, who is more like a mentor than a boss."

"To present themselves well, show interest in the work they will do and not the salary they get."
