West, also referred to as West Publishing, is part of the Thomson Reuters publishing corporation. The company was founded in 1872 in Minnesota by John B. West and Horatio West, and it originally gained popularity for establishing the National Reporter System. This system was responsible for reporting on the decisions of federal district courts and the federal Courts of Appeals.

Thomson Reuters purchased West Publishing in 1996. After this acquisition, Thomson Reuters merged West Publishing with law book companies such as Barclay, Clark Boardman, Bancroft-Whitney, Lawyers Cooperative Publishing and others. As a result of these mergers, West Thomson is among the largest legal publishers today. The company is now commonly referred to as West Information Publishing Group.
