What don't you like about working at Dell?

"When I first worked there, the corporate culture was fresh and innovative and didn't play the power-struggle games that typically go on in these environments. After I'd been there for a few years, more and more less than desirable middle-management types were hired, muddied the waters and essentially brought the bad habits that were the norm at other companies to Dell... I made it through 3 rounds of massive layoffs in 2000 (it was brutal to watch) but saw how things there would never get back to normal - I decided to become and independent contractor!"

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Don't be so afraid of coming up with new things and seeing what the development staff can do! If we hadn't broken a few of their IT mandates in 1995, there would have been no support.dell.com worth talking about!!!! Also, don't have all of the developers in IT and crushed by budgets and IT timelines - get them out into the business units so they can be more effective and react faster to changing markets!"
