Rovi got its start as the Macrovision Corporation in 1983. The company found success when a popular 1984 film, The Cotton Club, became the first video encoded with Macrovision technology. By the late 1980s, several major studios in Hollywood were using the company’s services. Macrovision technology soon expanded to include DVD players, digital cable boxes, personal media players and digital video recorders. On July 16, 2009, the company changed its name to Rovi Corporation.
