Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"Don't expect to make more than $12,000 a year unless you are in management."
What don't you like about working at Shopko?
"Our manager doesn't have a clue how to organize people - and our assistant manager hasn't been well-trained and is delegated too many jobs to be good at any of them! Some of the personnel are too physically handicapped for the job. The warehouse is WAY TOO SMALL for the volume of inventory and needs an updated method for unloading trucks and basic material handling."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"I would have meetings each shift with my employees, and have an organized strategy each day to accomplish what needs to be done. I ask for suggestions from my employees and implement them if they are appropriate and/ or helpful. I would invite the Regional management to visit when it is most chaotic and demand action, not words! I would pay my employees enough to limit turnover, in order to keep the experienced personnel in my store-and utilize their experience to train the un-experienced. I would delegate certain areas in my store to specific personnel - they would be responsible for their areas - but also be cross-trained and taught to work as a team."

"Be proactive, self-disciplined, and always look for that better and more productive way of doing the job at hand, and most importantly be a team player."

"They didn't offer their team members other opportunities within the company after their positions were terminated."

"Do the necessary footwork to make sure that everyone on your team not only has an opportunity to progress, but make sure that they are ready when the opportunity arises."

"The sense of comraderie in my store, particularly with other managers."

"Be aware that the ladder has different-shaped rungs; excelling at something won't necessarily mean you'll excel at the next thing; the required skill are often totally unrelated to each other."
What don't you like about working at Barnes & Noble?
"Work doesn't translate to anything but my job, retail during the holidays is like going to war."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Try to pay full-timers higher-wages and use more of them. Part-time staff are nice and all, but they should be a supplemental resource, not the backbone of the work force."

"Not much. This was a very good beginning job and I would suggest everyone to give t a shot for a while to see whats its like"

"Keep an open mind at all times. Treat others the way you would like to be treated, alwasy give credit where it is due."

"They say they want to hear what you have to say but they don't always listen."

"Listen to your associates they do care. If you listen and act with with concern you could solve alot of minor situations."
