After the company’s inception in 1963, MCI Communications Corporation quickly became the second largest long distance provider in the United States. The company was a leader in promoting competition in the long distance phone industry. In 1998, the company was purchased by MCI WorldCom. The company suffered some financial difficulty that led to another name change in 2003. In 2006, the company was purchased by Verizon for $6.7 billion, but the company still maintains its name and identity to date.

The company offers Internet service in over 140 countries and serves thousands of businesses worldwide. Major contracts such as Nasdaq Stock Exchange and the United States Department of Defense have also been secured by the company. Consumers may access Internet services in 4500 Points of Presence (PoPs) in over 2,800 different cities. The company operates 130 data centers in 22 countries. Many executives have the opportunity to relocate or work with different offices globally.

Verizon is one of the largest telecommunications service providers in the world. The company brings in over $71 billion in annual revenue and boasts 45.5 million voice and data customers in the United States. Through the merger, Verizon gained access to an international long distance network. The company also acquired several large accounts from the merger. Verizon Business combined the business and corporate accounts from both companies into one umbrella.
