The Federal National Mortgage Association, or Fannie Mae, is a government-sponsored national mortgage finance company. Fannie Mae was chartered by congress to strengthen and stabilize domestic mortgage markets and encourage home ownership. Fannie Mae President and Chief Executive Officer Michael J. Originally established as a government agency in 1938 as part of the federal government’s response to the Great Depression, Fannie Mae was chartered in 1968 by the United States Congress to insure liquidity in the mortgage lending market. In 2008, the Federal National Mortgage Association was placed in conservatorship by the federal government due to a near collapse of the nation’s mortgage system. Federal investment has enabled Fannie Mae to maintain liquidity in the mortgage lending market while stabilizing neighborhoods and preserving home values.

Though Federal National doesn’t provide direct loans to consumers, it underwrites and purchases mortgages from lenders in all fifty states. Fannie Mae also administers programs to promote the availability of rental housing, foreclosure prevention, housing market research and analysis, and monthly and quarterly housing surveys.
