"CarMax is a good company to work for. My time here has been very fruitful thanks to their training and mentorship program. I was able to become an efficient sales consultant and excel because of their training. I would recommend anyone to work here because of that fact and the fact that they have a strong team environment. It’s a good company to work for."

"Cons: Low pay, There are too many write-ups for small errors and many unnecessary changes like an iconic resolution model (we already do this process at work). The training is useless and outdated and most of it is no longer feasible. There are no career advancement opportunities. There are unfulfilled promises, such as career advancement and fairness. Sales consultants are rude to business office associates and usually, nothing is done about it. There is a large pay gap between other departments and sales consultants, and too many people that you have to answer too such as sales managers, business office managers, lead business office associates and location general manager. The job can be quite stressful because of sales goals and busy seasons like tax return season. They will often not allow you to take a break or expect you to cut your break short. The customer-centric atmosphere is unrealistic. They expect you to get everything right the first time and if you make a mistake (no matter how small or large) you will get written up for it."

"I worked for Carmax as a sales consultant for a little over one year. I found the company to be top notch! Even as a 100% commission job, the benefits for full time were very good and I enjoyed working for my management team and the team including other sales people, finance, service and buyers. The situation, however, is difficult. Because it's commission only work, very similar in practice as Circuit City used to be (C.C. started Carmax), it can be very stressful, difficult-to-impossible to make consistent money. The consultants I knew that did well consistently basically lived at the store and went home only to catch dinner and sleep. The team is there to help every consultant any way they can to make things happen, but ultimately it's the car buying experience that gets in the way of goals. Most people if not all people that are buying cars will fall back on leaving if one thing doesn't go their way during the process. It was our jobs to keep the customer on track and going to the next step. This is basically the entire job profile. So, I pretty much got tired of being a cheerleader and "pushing" people to the next step when they didn't want to go. Ironically, although I scored high in customer satisfaction surveys it was because I didn't push them enough to COMPLETE WHAT THEY CAME INTO THE STORE for. These same people always end up buying a car. They think they have to wear out every possibility before they finally agree to a bad deal elsewhere through sheer exhaustion. At Carmax, there's no such thing as a bad deal! But try to tell Mr. Joe Public this, they have to find out for themselves. My beef is not with Carmax, it's with dealing with the difficult transactions and the customers that are flaky at car buying time and having our livings depend on this house of cards."

"You get what you put in. A lot of people like to slack around, so you can expect slack around money. If you actually work, you can make a pretty good living. Yes, it would be nice to get a bit more per unit taking the fact of how huge the company is especially when they send you emails about how their revenues are looking for the year, but there's still room to make good $$$."

"The worst place to work. The scheduling is done by your peers. Half of our staff does not want to work and the ones who bust their tail ends end up being the ones who get stabbed in the back. At least the one in MD is like that."
