CarMax is a used car retailer that is based in Richmond, Virginia. Founders Rick Sharp and Austin Logan set out to better meet the needs of an under-served consumer: the used car buyer. In September of 1993, the first superstore was opened in Richmond, with about 500 cars in the inventory. A used 1993 Jeep Cherokee was the first vehicle sold. A second superstore, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, was opened a year later in November 1994, with two more superstores opened in Atlanta, Georgia the following year. Since then, one hundred locations have been opened across the country, with total sales surpassing two million vehicles.

CarMax careers can include sales, management, and administrative positions at the dealerships, as well as a variety of positions at the Richmond home office, ranging from accounting to transportation and logistics. Careers in finance are also available at CarMax Auto Finance, the private financing arm of the company. Employees working at CarMax are provided with a fun and casual work environment, where the focus is on teamwork, promoting from within, and ever expanding opportunity.

The CarMax culture is mostly based on the central idea of integrity. This concept is applied in three ways: in dealings with customers, internal relationships between employees, and in the delivery of products. Other values important to the company''s operations include being customer focused, encouraging diversity among employees, respecting employees'' individual worth and giving ongoing opportunities for advancement. CarMax is also focused on making the entire process of buying a car as fun and stress free as possible. CarMax vows to use a policy of continuous improvement: always look for the best, most effective way to get things done.
