CarMax is a used car retailer that is based in Richmond, Virginia. Founders Rick Sharp and Austin Logan set out to better meet the needs of an under-served consumer: the used car buyer. In September of 1993, the first superstore was opened in Richmond, with about 500 cars in the inventory. A used 1993 Jeep Cherokee was the first vehicle sold. A second superstore, located in Raleigh, North Carolina, was opened a year later in November 1994, with two more superstores opened in Atlanta, Georgia the following year.
