"Stay very far away!!"

"This would be an easy close!"

What don't you like about working at Burlington Coat Factory?

"Low pay, managers make $16 per hour, assistant managers maybe get up to $20 if they are lucky. Raises are crap, if you are rated at 'outstanding' you get a whopping 50 cent raise, and most ees get 10 cent raises. Regional managers preach 'promote from within' but constantly hire from the outside. This is not a career, but just a crap job to get by. The company was hit with a huge class action lawsuit and the original owners decided to run and sold the company. As a result, there were layoffs, store closures, and restructuring due to their incompetence. Theft in their stores is rampant yet their loss prevention teams watch the doors instead of doing real LP work. There are are no organized communication channels, it seems like they have several VPs and Directors at the corp office who all want things done their way without any thought behind their ideas. If their stores were run like Macy's it would be much better."

What do you like about working at Burlington Coat Factory?

"The time I was there the company was growing and expanding and they were always open to ideas to make the store more comparable with upscale stores versus outright competing with lower end stores like Ross and TJ Maxx."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Treat this place as if you're working at Macy's and never compare it with a store like Ross and you'll do real well."

What don't you like about working at Burlington Coat Factory?

"Although some members of corporate wanted to move forward and try new methods of conducting business to be more customer friendly, the ownership was real traditional so it created some sort of constant contradiction when they tried to run the stores. Management in stores were encouraged to be creative to drive sales, but maintain strict traditional business practices that were really out of date. Almost like you had to find a way to increase your sales in the 21st century using 19th century sales tactics."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"None. Management just follows corporate direction. Corporate should give a little more flexibility to the store's management and let the sales speak for the progress. Even when a store's profitability was very high, if corporate saw the store doing things differently from what they wanted, the store was considered a failure."
