What don't you like about working at VMware?

"Lack of training and growth. Everything I've learned I've had to teach myself. In July 09, VMware converted everyone from salaried to hourly and cut our pay by 18%. I consider this a breach of agreement and am looking for new employment."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Technical people desire to do good work, solve problems, learn new skills and take on ever growing technical challenges. Keep the bagel Wednesdays, the free fruit, drinks, goodies and other silly perks. Give people training and help them to grow."

VMware Employee

"I probably won't stay here very long."

What do you like about working at VMware?

"Engineering centric environment."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"The interviews are pathological - mine was 8 hours of writing code. It shouldn't take that long to tell if a developer has talent. This betrays gross inexperience in the leadership here and when offered the position I almost said no as a result of the interview process. It soured my view of the place."

What don't you like about working at VMware?

"It's very much a Linux or Unix culture. Windows development is somewhat backward and the build system is really last century."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Update the development technology in-house - use Microsoft compilers to compile code that runs on the Microsoft platforms. Stop developing for Windows as if it is a college environment that uses UNIX. Also, the HR at VMware is just bad. Not what I would have expected - not helpful any way and absolutely no infrastructure in place - no on-line forms of any type (W4, PTO, sick-leave, etc)"

Technical Support Engineer

"At first, it was the best place I had ever worked. Then the CEO was ousted."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Don't bother with VMware. You won't have any job security."

What don't you like about working at VMware?

"First company changed about 1000 people from salary to hourly because someone sued for promised back pay that was never delivered. Then they used some bullcrap excuse to cut peoples pay with the transition. After that, company laid off the entire support staff in California, but not before tricking some into training their replacements in India by saying the workers in India were a level 1 group and would only be handling low level calls."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Executive management has damaged the inner workings of the company too much to recover. They can jump off a cliff for all I care"

Senior Member of Technical Staff

"Making the transition from small and agile to large and responsive"

What do you like about working at VMware?

"It's a successful company doing well, and the relatively new CEO has brought a lot of needed change to the original entrepreneurial culture. People are generally treated well and allowances are generally made for work/life balance."

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
