Overview
University of Virginia was founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819. Jefferson's vision was to design a unique curriculum for leaders in public service and practical affairs. In addition to the core course requirements offered, the University of Virginia was the first to offer elective courses.


University of Virginia was officially opened in 1825. There were eight highly qualified faculty members in which five members were from England and three were from the United States. Also, sixty-eight students were admitted to the university in its first year. Students were offered courses in ancient and modern languages, math, law and moral philosophy. The school also offered courses in chemistry and medicine. Today, students who attend the University of Virginia, located in Charlottesville, Virginia can pursue degrees in engineering, education, medicine, nursing and many other career paths.
