"The pay in the Navy is comparable to civilian pay scales if you factor in the free healthcare and tuition assistance. Then there is the fact that you can do a job that normally requires a college education as a high school graduate. The Navy ensures that you receive all the necessary experience to succeed."

"The Navy and the military have designated pay scales based on rank and years of service. This is base pay. The military also pays a housing allowance based on location. As a Lieutenant Commander (O-4) with more than 20 years of service living in the Silverdale/Bremerton area, my gross pay was $128,400. My position was rated as an O-4 level based on responsibility and influence. I will always say that I made decent wages for the work I did. I work very hard, sometimes long hours, and put everything into my work. Some weeks are only 40-45 hours long; some weeks are closer to 70 hours long. My salary did not change. I am retiring from active duty as it is in the best interest of my family. They are my first and foremost priority."
