"Be sure that this position is something that fits with your career plans, both short-term and long-term. You should also be prepared to invest a lot of time with no tangible benefits, as this is a place where people are very secure in their positions. If you are going to work here, be prepared to see no vertical movement in your career for a while."
What don't you like about working at University of Pennsylvania?
"There are no opportunities for growth and advancement within my department. People in my position are also slightly handcuffed in terms of system access and autonomy, limiting how effective and helpful we can be. There are also lots of office quibbles that lead to gossiping, tattling, and general divisiveness. Also, too many people have low morale. It's insidious!"
What suggestions do you have for management?
"Implement new service initiatives to ensure all assistant directors are providing utmost counsel. I would restructure the department to cross-train employees in order to eliminate redundant middle management positions. I would also create a better on-line presence for student financial services."
