University of North Carolina Overview

The University of North Carolina is an internationally-renowned institute of higher education based in Chapel Hill. It was the first chartered public university in the country, opening for classes in 1795. The University opened the Women's College in 1931 but became fully coed in 1963. The former Women's College campus is now UNC-Greensboro, one of many consolidated schools across the state that also includes North Carolina State University, Western Carolina University, East Carolina University and many others.
