Southeastern Louisiana University is a highly regarded public university. The main campus is located in Hammond, Louisiana, and the school has four satellite properties. The university is more commonly called Southeastern or SLU. Linus Sims, a local high school principal, established Southeastern in 1925. Originally, the school served as a junior college for the area's high school graduates.

SLU has grown into one of Louisiana's largest institutions of higher learning. The university enrolls approximately 17,000 students from more than 50 countries. There are 45 undergraduate and 19 master's programs. Every degree program allows students the opportunity to pursue an honors curriculum. Faculty members teach 99 percent of SLU's classes. The students also have an active campus life. Southeastern has its own radio and TV stations and 16 varsity athletic teams.
