Contract Specialist

"Great Project - poor management"

Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?

"Coming from the outside for a management position is a step ahead."

What don't you like about working at Sound Transit?

"Sound Transit has a tradition of hiring from outside for management and above positions. People working in the position for well over a year are continuously passed over. There is also an amazingly sexist attitude that runs unabated there."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"Management does not take suggestions, but if they did, they should check some of their management for the sexist comments consistently made; and look more closely at the talent they have for management positions. They have lost a lot of good people who have left (voluntarily) because of these frustrations."

Diversity Specialist

"Honest"

What do you like about working at Sound Transit?

"I really enjoyed working with the people."

What don't you like about working at Sound Transit?

"Having been an experienced Senior level manager, some of the management staff are woefully and signficantly incompetent when it comes to managing employees. They lack good management skills and are poor practioners of good management practices.Morale in some departments is really low and that is a direct result of the managers in those departments."

What suggestions do you have for management?

"The need to hire the right person...really take the time and effort to hire the right person. Skills as a manager don't come from certifications, credentials, advanced degrees or professional degrees. Stop, Stop, Stop, being dazzled by the form, you need to look at the substance. Good management, that is, the ability to manage people comes from within, from the heart and from experience. You can find out about a potential manager by asking previous employer's workforces what kind of manager the prospective candidate was. Don't rely on management to give information about another manager, dig deep because managers tend to support one another no matter how terrible the one manager might have been. Take time to identify good management training programs and treat it from the development approach. Good managers are not born, they are made. Hire people who have a strong work history of demonstrating a high level of actions that were morally and ethically right."
