A service manager plays a big role in an automotive mechanical shop or at an automotive dealership. They are responsible for hiring and training employees, ensuring that all service orders are dealt with promptly; and they interact with customers regularly to ensure customers are happy with the service they receive. On an average day, a service manager may spend time consulting with customers and the company owner, reviewing work orders and ordering parts for the mechanic shop.
Skillset: Service managers generally have very strong mechanical skills and they are adept at troubleshooting automotive problems. They are familiar with auto body repair work and interact well with people. They also have strong leadership skills and are familiar with profit and loss statements that pertain to their particular department.
Education: Many service managers have formal vocational technical training combined with business leadership skills. A bachelors degree in automotive engineering or electrical engineering are desirable degrees to pursue for this career. Mathematical courses and computer science courses are also suggested for a person who is pursuing this type of occupation.
