Sensata Technologies was founded in 1916 as General Plate Company in order to provide gold plates for the Rhode Island jewelry industry. In 1931, General Plate merged with the Spencer Thermostat Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts in order to form the Metals and Controls Corporation. This merger allowed the company to not only engage in metal processing, but also temperature sensing control. In 1959, Texas Instruments merged with the corporation.
