"It used to be a good place to work, plus the management knew what they were doing... not now. They keep going through too many top/managers. Jobs are not secure. Thankless job, and some managers do not stand behind their team."
What do you like about working at Kaiser Permanente?
"As I stated, I loved my project management position (a few years back), with web, infrastructure, software/hardware installs or upgrades. Our management knew what project management was about. They knew what a true project was. We were a team and worked together to help each other. We even had team meetings and get-togethers. But that was due to a good, knowledgeable manager who knew what project management truly was and not what it has turned out to be today."
Do you have any tips for others interviewing with this company?
"In March of last year, Kaiser outsourced their support groups to IBM (go figure), and many of their Project Managers are IBM contractors, along with other contractors. So, trying to work there as a F/T employee may not be too long in the future, as there wouldn't be benefits to be paying out. If you want to work in a state of nonsense then go for it! But be careful."
What don't you like about working at Kaiser Permanente?
"Bowing down to every area just to try and have a project for the group to work on. Stopping the defunct SR's coming through the door that were redundant, or weren't feasible. But with new top management that came on board, they decided they wanted to have more say in what the PM office should work on and how they should work. So, for every manager that came to Kaiser, we had to throw out the processes we were using and now start new processes from the new top manager. In the last 4 years I was there, our groups went through 8 different managers. It has been the North against the South as to who is giving the orders... and we are in the middle. Such a mess! No one had the guts to take a stand and say what was needed. Then they decided under one management that we needed to be PM certified with Kaiser methodologies, but after a year, a different manager came in and decided that the PM certification within Kaiser wasn't needed. Project Management deals with certain processes in initiating projects, but all the redundant paperwork and processes does NOT implement the project. It's working with a team, one on one and communication. They, the management think a project can only be implemented with redundant reporting (about 5 different ways with the same information, just different format), and all the time is spent and wasted on reporting... not really getting the work done. IT was a mess. Incompetent management. The wannabees. I've never taken robot classes or not sure if they have software for that, but if that comes out Kaiser will be the first to get it. That's what they want their people to be."
What suggestions do you have for management?
"If they want their people to be PM certified within Kaiser or outside of Kaiser, then they also need to be certified. They then may get a clue that what they are asking for certain projects aren't feasible or make any sense. They need LESS management and more worker bees. Look at what your positions are, with all the outsourcing, your positions may not be needed too long in the future. Gentler understanding goes a long way."
