Program directors are responsible for organizing events, creating activities, and supervising the operations of a business, community program or a conference. On an average day, a program director may coordinate workshops and activities, arrange fundraising events and provide support to business staff and business owners.
Skillset: Program directors generally have strong leadership ability and are efficient with organization. It is uncommon for people in this occupation to handle several different tasks at the same time. Grant writing, business writing and an ability to make effective proposals and business presentations are skills that people in this occupation usually posses.
Education: Many program directors have bachelors or masters degrees in non-profit business management, advertising, human resources or sociology. Taking courses in computer science, fine arts and English composition will help to enhance a person’s chances for success in this occupation.
Career Path: A great foundation for a program director’s career path is built on excellent writing skills, good leadership abilities and great computer skills. Software design courses, business management classes and leadership classes are recommended.
