In 1962, Walmart was founded in Rogers, Arkansas, by Sam Walton. Mr. Walton said that he had “always been driven to buck the system, to innovate, to take things beyond where they've been.” With these thoughts in mind, he opened the first Sam’s Club in Midwest City, Oklahoma, on April 7, 1983.

By April 2011, more than 3,800 Walmart stores and 609 Sam’s Clubs operated in the United States with nearly 100 more in Brazil, China, Mexico and Puerto Rico. Currently, Walmart has 8,500 stores and employs 660,000 workers in 15 countries. Worldwide, Walmart employs more than 2.1 million people and is the largest private employer in the U.S. and Mexico. On January 31, 2011, Walmart reported a revenue of more than $422 billion. During 2010, Sam’s Club sales were 11.5%, or $47 billion of Walmart’s total sales.

Sam’s Club is a membership-only chain of retail warehouses and sells nearly all of its merchandise directly off the pallets and in bulk. Generally, the merchandise is stocked in steel bins and marketed under private labels. The products sold, but not limited to are:

• food and meats
• apparel
• crystal and collectibles
• sunglasses
• jewelry
• designer goods

Most Sam’s Clubs locations contain a pharmacy, photo, bakery, tire and battery, optical, café, and floral departments. Sam’s Clubs are well known for the stands at which employees prepare food items for members to sample prior to purchasing. Unquestionably, the Clubs and Walmart stores require great numbers of employees.

Sams Club careers can be developed in any of the Club’s many departments. More than 47 million Sams’ shoppers need to be physically assisted, waited on and directed. As long as there is a Sam’s Club, qualified employees will be in demand.
