Restaurant Depot is a bulk wholesaler, analogous to Sam''s Club and Costco, but more tailored to professional cooks and the needs of restaurants. Similar to the previously mentioned stores, a membership is required for shopping at Restaurant Depot. However, free membership is offered to any non-profit business or venture.
The company has been seen on popular shows, such as Top Chef, where contestants have a limited supply of money and are required to cook for a vast number of people. Popular items include meats and proteins and the company works hard to stay stocked to meet all clients’ needs. The stores are located throughout the country, but more heavily concentrated on the West coast, Southwest region, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic area. Continual building of new stores around the nation ensures for job opportunities.
As such, there are often openings to work at this booming business. Popular Restaurant Depot careers include stockers who must maintain and resupply the shelves. Managers for each area of the store are responsible for their individual specialty, like Seafood or Produce. Cashiers are also in high demand to scan all purchased items and help customers load their items into their vehicles. Another area with frequent openings is in receiving. Large deliveries are a constant, particularly when dealing with bulk quantities. Employees are needed to help unload trucks and stock the items before they are brought onto the main floor. Working at Restaurant Depot means somewhat of a casual attire. Heavy lifting and the demand to freely move and walk around comfortably will dictate a need for strong, supportive shoes and an ability to work in a fast paced environment.
The Restaurant Depot culture is one of a typical retail environment. The nature of the industry means a high turnover rate. It is somewhat unfairly assumed that jobs in retail are for the unskilled, so college students will use the opportunities as a temporary position rather than a full time career. However, commitment and loyalty are rewarded at Restaurant Depot, as the company prefers to promote internally. A worker will have to demonstrate this dedication first and show that they are willing and capable for more responsibility, as well as better pay.
Restaurant Depot benefits are minimal for entry level jobs. This is true for most of the retail sector, which could not offer the low prices they did if they gave every employee benefits. However, higher management and corporate jobs do receive benefits, like a 401K and health insurance.
Director of Sales is the highest paying job at Restaurant Depot at $128,000 annually.
