Pep Boys Auto was founded in 1921 by four Navy buddies: Emanuel Rosenfeld, Maurice L. Strauss, W. Graham Jackson and Moe Radavitz in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company was originally called Pep Auto Supplies, but the name changed after a local policeman instructed motorists to see the “boys at Pep” for not having their cars in top shape. The name was then changed to “The Pep Boys: Manny, Moe and Jack”, which is still its official name to date.

At this time, Moe Radavitz had left the company. Coincidentally, “Moe” was Marurice Strass's nickname. The well-known Pep Boys logo was commissioned shortly thereafter. In 1925, “Jack” left the company, and his caricature was replaced by Moe's brother.
