Pep Boys Auto was founded in 1921 by four Navy buddies: Emanuel Rosenfeld, Maurice L. Strauss, W. Graham Jackson and Moe Radavitz in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The company was originally called Pep Auto Supplies, but the name changed after a local policeman instructed motorists to see the “boys at Pep” for not having their cars in top shape. The name was then changed to “The Pep Boys: Manny, Moe and Jack”, which is still its official name to date.
At this time, Moe Radavitz had left the company. Coincidentally, “Moe” was Marurice Strass's nickname. The well-known Pep Boys logo was commissioned shortly thereafter. In 1925, “Jack” left the company, and his caricature was replaced by Moe's brother. To date, the only relative to the original Pep Boys currently involved in the company is Stuart Rosenfeld, Manny's grandson, who serves as the Vice President of Distribution.
Today, Pep Boys Auto is a multi-billion dollar automotive aftermarket chain. The company currently has 723 stores and about 7,000 service stations in the United States and Puerto Rico. In 2005, it was named as one of the 500 fastest growing companies. Pep Boys Auto's biggest competitors include Discount Tire Co., General Parts, Inc. and the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. The company currently has over 18,000 employees.
The Pep Boys culture is all about people who loves cars and believe in doing things the right way. Pep Boys careers include associate positions in one of their stores, service bays, distribution centers or Store Support Centers. The Pep Boys chain is present in 35 states and in Puerto Rico, so working at Pep Boys is accessible to a wide range of automotive enthusiasts. In addition to associate positions, management and supervisory positions are available at the stores and service centers. Corporate positions may also be available at the Pep Boys headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Pep Boys benefits are vast and competitive. Employees are offered medical, dental and vision coverage with a flexible benefit spending account. The company offers a 401(k) plan with a match program. Short-term, Long-term Disability and life insurance coverage, as well as paid time off (PTO) are also provided. Another perk afforded to employees of Pep Boys Auto is discount on store merchandise and services as well as discount partnerships with Dell, Ford, Sears and more. A tuition reimbursement program also allows employees of Pep Boys to advance their education while working.
Divisional Vice President is the highest paying job at Pep Boys Auto at $196,000 annually.
